Torpedo heater has fuel and fire but blows smoke unless I restrict air flow

The heater worked fine for the last year and then all of a sudden last week it started smoking when lit. I can take the cover off and run it and it seems to have both spark and fuel but will smoke off/on. (a lot of smoke) I finally decided to try reducing the air flow from the back by placing cardboard over 1/2 the intake and that seemed to help for about 10 minutes. Then it started smoking again. I replaced the ignitor but am unsure what to do next!

So I figured it out. Was the fuel filter not providing enough fuel. Removed it, cleaned it, and put it back together. Worked like a champ! (will replace it in the daylight hours)

Pick the heater up throw It at the wall, the heater has been used to heat my uncles home no problem now it wont light, on the day its needed most outside in the freezing cold, so my solution was throw it at wall and go to walmart.

SOURCE: Sears forced air kero heater wont start, spitting fuel out front

sounds like the ignitor is bad, mine would try to light and do the same thing. I noticed one night that it was arcing out the entire length of the wires to the plug. If you have a good spark then i would suggest a CAD flame sensor, very cheap.

SOURCE: pro 110, runs 10 min., blows white smoke ,shuts off

the first thing you need to do is go back to useing K1 kerosene, diesel fuel not only burns dirty but also has a tendency to gel up in cold weather which could be makeing it hard for the heater to draw the proper amount of fuel. To reset the pressure you will need a gage, it should run at about 6-7 psi. you can order a pressure gage from mr. heater online, they are by far the cheapest I have found as they are the actual manufacturer or call 1-800-251-0001

You Must set the pump pressure quickly! If allowed to run with the nose cone a "bright" cherry red the welds will deterioate to the point that the end will separate from the combustion chamber. Individual sheet metal parts of the chamber are not available.

Water in the fuel tank, I personally had this problem this morning irritating but was simple to cure. Empty your fuel in to a clean five gallon bucket and observe, fuel is lighter than water and will float on top water settles to the bottom. You now have to dry out the tank, get creative I stuffed mine with rags and sopped it all up, this worked fine for me. You can siphon off the fuel from the water and re-use the fuel. Just be careful not to siphon off the water with it.
