Difficult to answer without a make, model, or symptom, but common problems are the cord, pressure switch, check vavle, ring and cylinder, and valve failure. mastertoolrepair.com has a lot of parts breakdowns and can sell you parts.

How to Fix an Air Compressor That Doesn't Build

  • If you are asking is it possible to repair a leaky air compressor tank the answer is no, not without risk of life or death. When the pressure builds great enough, what ever has plugged that hole, will blow out and it will hurt of kill whoever that plug happens to hit.

After starting the compressor, the tank does not fill up to 120 psi and shut the compressor off automatically. It will continue to run and not fill the tank completelhy. How can I fix this?

It could be one of three things. 1. The air intake could be dirty to the point that it cannot take in enough air volume with each cylinder stroke to be able compress it to 120. Try cleaning the air filter. 2. The reed valve that prevents the return of air from the tank to the compressor is not sealing well. This might be cleanable, but requires disassembly. 3. The cylinder itself has a poor seal giving you bad compression. This would require major surgery and parts, and is probably not worth fixing.

My friends Craftsman air compressor stopped running

The compressor in question is basically a throw away.
My personal opinion is it's more trouble then it's worth.
Even after it's fixed you still have a throw away compressor.
However it is possible to repair it if the parts are still available.
Check out the link below for parts and diagrams for the compressor in question.

Hope this helps and good luck.

The Air Compressor Smokes and Then turns off after a while.

sounds like the piston rings are blowing by allowing oil to get into the compression cylinder.
You should chuck it and go buy a new compressor as this one is more to fix than to replace.
