Question about Office Equipment & Supplies
I have changed the print wheel and ribbon and still have the same problem with half of very faintly printing on all characters.
You didn't give a make or model but if it is an IBM wheelwriter press down firmly on both ends of the platen they do work loose.

Sounds like the platen is not fully seated in the side frames, align the black latches with the frames and press firmly on both sides of the platen. the latches do occasionally crack in witch case you may need a platen replacement.

SOURCE: No Characters Typing
could be the ribbon is not lifting, do you see an image on the ribbon, also may be twisted inside the cartridge the shiny side has to be facing the keyboard.

SOURCE: Characters do not print.
The print solenoid plunger has a plastic cap on the end of the plunger it is probably broken. They are available but you need a bit of mechanical ability to install.

SOURCE: skipping parts of the letters
More likely than not the type needs to be properly aligned. If it's out of alignment, it can result in the top or bottom half of the character typing faintly. Basically, the typebar is hitting the platen too high or too low. When it is properly adjusted (by a qualified repairman), it will type properly.

Put in a mulit part form, if it prints on the copies the ribbon isn't lifting, if it dosen't the plastic cap on the print solenoid needs replaced.

To answer your question yes the print wheel can be changed, BUT that is not your problem. The machine needs to be reset or the reset tab needs adjusting.
When you turn on the machine the print head moves to the right side, the print wheel spins, and the ribbon jumps up and down, that is the machine resetting its self.
