How do I clear old files from my Presario C disk?

Try the disk cleanup utility if you haven't already.

compaq is HP so best is to ask them, there, now here.
RTC error mean , the RTC coin cell is dead.
all PCs this old are dead battery ,
RTC= real time clock chip says IM DEAD, but is battery dead ,..

remove the coin cell, and put in a new one.

best is to set time in BIOS setup. 1st.

this Compaq is 18 years old now. or 126 dog years.
id , push it off a cliff on the 4th July with fireworks. and all.
let me guess its XP the VIRUS magnet.
some this old are windows 98
a hopeless case there, no? no support, no books and no updates.
the books at HP are long gone
so now all books are , sold by horders. $$$
it can be costly and dangerous to deal with folks like that.

usb 2.0 might be the conflict

ur installer disk is not proper

You should try to Disk Clean up your hard drive, Defragment your Disk, Check your disk for any bad sectors and clear all cookies and temp files from your browser. Use either Ashampoo WinOptimizer, Advance Windows Care or Tune Up Utilities as an optimization software to optimize your system.

Go to bootdisk.com and download boot files for your operating system (ex. Windows XP). There are software for floppy disk which is the easier way to get your boot files. If you do not have a floopy you will have to get the CD files, there you have all the instructions how to get the CD. Once you get the files, insert the floopy or the CD and reboot your computer. The filse should be installed automatically, if not do it manually and reboot computer again.

empty the trash bin, delete un-necessary files you don't use. games you never play off. programs that take up space. back up the files you want on an external hard drive.

i have succeful install windows xp into compaq presario cq40 with this windows xp disk .It diffrent compare to other windows xp.it support compaq presario cq40.100% working for all compaq presario cq40.

check these measures :

1. uninstall unnecessary s/w s
2. defragment ur system
3. remove unnecessary programs from start-up
4. remove temporary files & clear history
5. use disk-cleanup
6. update ur anti-virus

Hmm...Something may be wrong really!

Are u able to copy from any folder within the hard disk?

Some viruses / malwares are preventing the copy function of the windows from working properly!!!
(So, try some good antivirus)

Also...one more info for u
   1. u must have sufficient disk space for copying files to hard disk:)
   2. if file system is FAT32, u may mot be able to copy files of size more than 4GB
   3. Try updating the firmware of the CD/DVD drive
   4. Try coming back here with more clues to ur problem :)
