Question about Dryers

1 Answer

Drum often need manual turn before it starts to turn

My guess would be a loose belt or motor brushes.
A quick inspection (top and rear panels removed) would appear to show belt is OK
Looking at spares suppliers I cannot find anyone selling motor brushes
Even with back panel removed the motor is not accessible - should I 'go in' through the bottom to check the state of the brushes?
All advice appreciated

Tumble dryers dont have brush motors they are started by a capacator which will be on or around the motor.
It is about the size of a pepper pot with wiring to it.
These are cheap to buy and if the drum turns after you give it a push then this is the culprit.
Hope this helps & thankyou for using Fixya.

What is wrong with a Frigidaire front load dryer whose start button light comes on but drier just humms.

Most likely the belt has slipped off the drum. It might have also worn out. The process to repair it is a pain. You did not post the make and model but if there is a kick panel under the door you can remove that easily to check the belt. Unplug the machine and remove the screws that hold the panel. They are under the bottom edge. Take the panel off and get a vacuum cleaner and clean out all the lint. Use a light to see the belt and the motor. You can use your hand to turn the drum and see if the motor turns or you can check it by close inspection. If the belt is off the pulley you have to take the whole top of the dryer off to get to it. Check the back for screws and remove any that hold the top on. The top lifts off of the unit and it make take some serious pulling to get it loose. You can then see into and around the drum.

My dryer is a frigidaire, and when i turn it on yo...

The humming is the sound of the Electric motor that drives the drum to spin

You will need to remove the top & the front panel to repair.

First just remove the TOP panel only for inspection

On the top's rear side you will see two small brackets with screws in them. The brackets attach to the Top & the rear panel to secure the top on
Remove these two screws
Now go to the front & pry each front corner up with a flat head screwdriver between the top and the front panel
Spring steel retainer snaps holds that into place and will not break when prying upward
Remove the electrical connectors and mark them with tape if wanted were they connect to for reference
Now look inside the dryer and you will see the drun and the belt should be around this drum. If not replace the belt. You will need to remove the front panel side screws to remove the front panel to remove the drum. The belt tensioner hhas a roller on it too which will need replacing.

Reverse procedure to install

My maytag dryer makes a loud noise when on. It sounds like a belt. Can I fix it and how? It's an older model, I don't know where the model number would be. It's loudest when first turned on. Thankyou

To remove the belt go the the rear of the dryer and remove the two or four screws holding the inspection door near the bottom corner of the dryer.Remove this small door. Unplug the dryer. Look inside and see how the old belt is positioned on the pulleys. Releive the tention on the belt by moving the belt tentioner and sliding the belt off the motor pulley.
Go the the front of the dryer and remove the two screws holding the front panel on. Tilt the dryer front forward and remove. Mark and remove the two door switch wires and move the front panel out of the way. Undo the four screws holding the drum support from the front of the dryer and remove. Grab the drum and sllide it forward out of the dryer.
Vaccum the inside of the dryer and inspect to make sure the rollers move freely. If they don't move freely or show wear, replace rollers and lubricate with light oil. Replace belt.
Put belt over drum. Reinstall the drum into the dryer. On some of the older dryers there were teflon drum gliders located inside the front drum support. Inspect glides and replace if needed.
Reinstall the front drum support and four screws. Reinstall the front panel with two screws.
Replace door switch wires.
Lift the top and make sure the belt is positioned on the drum where the old belt was.
Go the rear of the dryer and pinch the belt sliding threw the belt tentioner under the pulley and over the belt pulley.
Reinstall the rear door with all the screws.
Faster the top down and plug the dryer in and test.
Your done.

When pressing the start botton it hums but will not spin. This is on a Kenmore dryer

Remove the rear panel and check to see if the belt is broken. If it looks ok, try to turn the motor by hand. If ok, watch while the machine is tried--if the motor turns, but the belt doesn't move, then check the belt tensioning idler for a broken spring. If the tension device is pulled to it's stops and the belt is still loose, replace the belt. The front panel must be removed to access the belt which passes over the top of the drum. Hope this helps.

Dryer make a squeeling noise when going, how do I fix and get the back off the dryer

Nothing could be easier to work on than these beautys. After unplugging the machine start by popping the top so you can get to the screws holding the front panel on. As pictured gently push the springclips in on each side about 2 or 3 inchs from each end to release the top: top%20removal.jpg Pop that top with a putty knife. After removing the 2 phillips screws holding the front to the frame (near the top on each side) and taking the wires loose from the door switch, lift the front panel out yer way.
Remove the rear hatch and take the idler loose. Then you can get the drum out. Grab the belt and yank upwards on the drum and remove it out the front.

INSPECTING THE DRYER Look for broken glides on the front panel: 5303937139.jpg?height=147&width=200 5303937139 glide kit $24 The rear drum has a big trailer ball type mount that holds it into place, over time the plastic bearing wears out and the support under it squeals, (it is telling you serious stuff is going to happen) The metal mount under the by now thin, failed, and gone bye-bye plastic bearing, will eat into the ball and cut it off causing the drum to fall into the heater element AND break the belt. YIKES! NOT GOOD! a%20frigidaire%20dryer%20bearing%20failure.jpg?height=150&width=200
Failed bearing with missing ball
The kit (5303281153) comes with everything you need to repair the bearing. It is about $25 bucks or less. With the drum removed and the bearing inspected you want to take a gander at the heating element. If the element is broken, there is no need to buy the whole pan for $100. You can get a restring kit for about $25. Just remember to evenly space the new wire so it will not burn out quickly. Remove all lint from the dryer and the drum. This is the main killer of a heater element. Lint on it causes a hot spot. gibsonfrig%20elec%20coil.jpg 5300622032 Restring kit $25 The fuse mounts on the rear wall of the dryer in the upper right hand corner. If it blows the dryer will not run. Clean out the vent and any lint in the dryer or the fuse will continue to blow. gibson%20rear%20wall.jpg 134120900 Fuse $12 The belt part # is 5303281154 $10 The Idler is part # 131863007 $12 For routing info see Belt routing above on anotha page my friend. LOL Or better yet how about the repair manual? Here is a newer repair manual. The innards of the dryer is the same as always but the newer models have a thermister and assorted goodies: ELECTROLUX REPAIR MANUAL

Makes a horible noise like spinning out of balance

All dryers have to have a way of allowing the tumbler (that's the thing you put the clothes in) to turn freely, not all of them are the same tho, some use bearings, some use slides, others use rollers. Over time these rollers will need to be oiled, the slides will get thin and start metal to metal contact causing a noise, The rear bearings will then start to make their way to china and cause the tumbler to rub into the heating element and OUCH! These things will cause the motor to prematurely DIE! Its best to examine the dryers, rollers, and slides when you first hear the noise.

I have a kenmore 27 inch electric dryer that when you push the start button it sounds like it starts but the drum doesn't turn. What could this be?

A clear indication that your dryer belt is broken is when the dryer drive motor runs but the drum does not rotate. A new belt is relatively inexpensive from several online or a local parts vendor, but installing it can be a bit frustrating since the dryer drum usually needs to be remove to install a replacement belt. Access to the interior of the dryer is usually necessary. For Maytag (and some Kenmore) models, the front of the dryer can be easily removed (two screws below front contour) by pulling out on the bottom of the panel and rotating up to release the top clips. Once off, place to the side, then remove four machine screws from the front drum/lint filter assembly, then remove by pullling out. Once off, place aside. Remove drum by lifting up and pulling out on drum (since the belt is broken it will not provide any resistance). Once removed, inspect the motor pulley arrangement noting the belt routing path around the motor pulley, belt tensioner, and the drum. Inspect the drum for belt wear marks, noting approximate location on drum where belt rides. Install replacement belt by routing through pulley arrangement (ridged side of belt rides againt motor pulley), then "hang" the belt on the interior backside to enable reaching the belt after reinstalling the drum. After placing the drum edge on the rear rollers, lift the front of the drum up into position, working the belt around the drum into the drum groove. Once the belt is in the groove, the drum should stay in position without lifting from the front. Check for proper pulley routing, taking care to avoid routing the belt OVER the tensioner belt keeper, i.e., route the the belt under the belt keeper to avoid belt riding on the keeper and failing prematurely. Install the front/lint filter assembly. As you manually rotate the drum, reach along the top and side of the drum and gently pull the belt out of the groove and into its normal ride position. Install the front panel, plug the unit in, start and check for proper rotation of the drum.

My dryer drum sparks when i push on it

You have loose or shorted wiring in the dryer. Unplug the dryer.Raise the top lid. Remove the screws on the top right and left inside the dryer to remove the front panel. Disconnect the door switch wires and set the panel aside. Reach in under the drum and remove the drive belt from the motor and pulley. Remove the drum. Inspect the wiring visible inside. Remove the rear panel from the dryer and inspect all wiring and thermostats and fuse relays.Remove the terminal cover where the cord connects and inspect all wiring there for broke or loose. Open the control panel and inspect all wires there for broken or loose. Repair any wiring found defective and replace any parts found defective.

My 15 year old Maytag Dryer is starting to squeal from the drum rubbing metal to metal up front. The Belt is in good shape. What else could be problem?

Time for a new one I think, but here goes.
The drum guide rollers at the rear or the guide pads at the front will be worn out, due to the age parts may be difficult.
To inspect:
Electrically Isolate the machine, at the joint between the front panel and top panel insert a flat blade 4" from each side to release the top catches and tilt the lid back to open, remove the front panel internal screws and remove the front panel.
The drum and machine internals can be seen.
Remove the drum belt - note the belt path direction around the motor and belt tensioner.
The drum removes by rotating and easing forward, there will be pads or rollers that support the drum, check these as they are the most probable cause.
