It sounds like the motor has a weak thermal overload if after a while it starts again. Either that or it's drawing high amps in which case you could have one of several different problems.

I've seen a lot of the breakers like that get "weak" and trip too easy so that could be it. The only way to tell would be to get an amp reading when it trips. Possible causes if the breaker is good would be a bad unloader valve or a bad check valve. When those fail the compressor will be trying to start with too much head pressure and cause it to over amp and trip out. When it shuts off listen for a short hiss of air....that is the unloader releasing head pressure. If you don't hear that then it'ls not unloading. If it leaks for more than just a second or two the check valve is bad and is letting tank pressure back into the line.

IF THE SWITCH WILL NOT SHUT IT DOWN ITS NOT WIRED CORRECTLY, THE POINTS IN THE SWITCH ARE WELDED TOGETHER AND WONT RELEASE OR THE LINE UNDER THE SWITCH IS CLOGGED

SOURCE: clarke hunter 60 2.5 hp compressor , trip switch keeps tripping

if you are talking about the brass valve with a small pin in the middle.it leaks untill the pressure get to 15-25 lbs then the pin pops out and stops leaking and the compressor pumps to pressure. this is normal that valve it a cold start valve that allows the compressor to start with out binding

SOURCE: Clarke air compressor ac2500 - not working - no compression

Your pressue builds up and stays trapped in head which causes the motor to lock up. Your pressure switch is probably bad.

SOURCE: I have a Clarke SHHH air 2/9 compressor

I also have a Clarke SHHH 2/9 with the same problem. I sent it off to machine mart service dept. in Nottingham who quoted £189 to replace a faulty pump. Am not going ahead with repair since replacement cost is only £250. Cost sending to Nottingham (from local machine mart) & cost of estimate & cost of return (to local machine mart) was £24 which I thought was reasonable. Very unimpressed with compressor itself wich failed after only light use.

Failed capacitor on clarke SE 14 compessor

On electric motors with two capacitors, one is a start capacitor, the other is a run capacitor. Start capicitors have plastic cases and are rated from 200mf to 400mf and higher depending on the size of the motor. Run capacitors are in the 20mf to 40mf range and usually have metal cases. If you have an electric motor service center in the area they can recommend what size you should use for the size (HP) motor you have.

STARTS AND RUNS FOR 30 SECONDS THEN SHUTS OFF, STARTS AND RUNS FOR A COUPLE SECONDS KEEPS DOING THIS. I SUSPECT IT HAS A THERMAL SWITCH. WHERE IS IT? CAN I WIRE AROUND IT?

Hi

Yes I think you may be right, it could quite well the thermal switch,"pressure controlled on/off"switch and is not properly set up, minimum and maximum stop/start.
If what I see in the photo, the pressure switch is beside the top tank with a pressure gauge on it, and the electrical supply should feed into/from it.

Hope this gives you a little food for thought, and hope that it is a little helpful

Cheers

My air comp. ac2001b will run fine shut off then wont start up under pressure but will if you drain air out of it

There is a differential between the shut-off and start pressures of about 20 psi and these pressures are adjustable on some switches. What the switch must do as well is relieve the pressure on the compressor head so that the motor does not try start against a load. You shoud hear the pressure relieving when the compressor shuts off, if not you need to rectify this problem, otherwise check the pressure that the motor cuts in at and set it or replace the switch.
