My Dell computer is operating very slowly

The time it takes to respond varies, sometimes at an acceptable speed and mostly not.

I do not know how to "defragment" my files. Can you advise me

  • eblorge Jan 22, 2009

I have a Dell 9100 Inspiron, Microsoft XP system.
The slowness of my computer is erratic, sometimes it operates at normal speeds, and at other times it takes a long time for any response. This also applies when I get on the internet. Is this a separate problem?

It is likely a memory issue... this can be fixed by adding more memory.. or stopping some programs from running at start up...
it may also be spyware... i recommend spybot s&d which you can download here http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html

also you may need to run your defrag program

Possible reasons for the slowness are

    • Too much software runing on background

    • Spyware or other harmfull software

    • Driver conficts or other driver issues

    • Hardware problem

    • Corrupt files or fragmentation on drive.
Are you available now? I could have a look around at it over remote support.

If this happens using Windows, then you need to reinstall Windows first, to ensure it is not the system.

If the computer is abnormally slow, even if you boot on a different system (DOS), then usually it is the RAM.

Do a RAM upgrade, that should fix the problem.

Slowness is generally associated with scarce RAM amount. Check the amount of RAM memory, by entering Dxdiag on run box, under start button.

If memory is less than 1 GB you need to add more memory.

If RAM memory is OK, check if your computer has spyware.

Download and install Spybot from link below, and perform a full computer scan.

    The home of Spybot-S&D

Uninstall Spybot after scan and cleaning is finished.

you may also want to remove some programs from start up

the more programs you have set to start at startup the longer it will take your system to start

  • DEKR
    DEKR Jan 21, 2009

you can do a defragment by clicking start programs then accessories

then click on disk defrag then when the box open click defrag.

make sure you shut screensaver off while defragment is running

you don't want to use any program

the defrag will sort out your bad segments and files

then when its done just close off and restart

let me know if this helps

How do you clean a MacBook Air screen?

Hi Andrew
Most computer shops sell what are called "Computer Wipes". They are a one-off use item and packs vary in size, but they are moist - not wet - and generally do a very good job of cleaning all parts of a computer.

How do you reset power management on the ibook g3

For most situations, a restart is sufficient. If the computer has stopped responding, try these steps, in order, until the computer responds:
  1. Force Quit (Option-Command-Escape)
  2. Restart (Control-Command-Power)
  3. Force Shut Down (press the power button for 10 seconds)
Only perform a PMU reset on the computer if none of the above steps resolved the situation.

Identifying lock-ups and freezes This document will help you to locate and troubleshoot programs that cause your notebook to hang, freeze, or lock-up. Print this document or save it to your hard disk drive to have the reference available after disconnecting from the internet. Symptoms of notebook lock-ups, freezes, and hangs include:
  • Nothing moves or blinks on the computer display.
  • The computer will not respond to the mouse or keyboard.
  • An error message appears and will not go away.
Freezes, crashes, and lock-ups may be caused by programs locking up resources, software conflicts, or older programs being incompatible with newer operating systems. Follow the steps in this document, in order, until the problem is resolved. Close locked-up programs and locate problem software If your notebook locks up or stops responding while using a program, close the stalled program to continue using other programs. Also, while closing the program, take note of which other programs are running at the same time.
  1. Close the program that is "Not responding" and determine if the lock-ups continue.
  2. If the lock-ups no longer occur after the program is closed, go to Uninstall and re-install the problem software .
  3. If the lockups continue, press ctrl + alt + delete to go back to the Task Manager.
  4. Write down all of the programs that are running when the lock-up occurs. The conflict could have originated by another software application that is running at the same time.
  5. Close other programs that are running one at a time (except for Explorer and Systray) and determine if the lockups continue. Once you find the problematic software application, go to Uninstall and re-install the problem software .
Uninstall and re-install the problem software To resolve the problem that is causing the notebook to lock-up, uninstall the suspected software and then re-install it. If your software came with an uninstaller program, use it first; otherwise, follow the steps below to uninstall and re-install the program.
  1. Click Start > Control Panel .
  2. When the Control Panel window opens, select Uninstall a program.
  3. Select the program that is causing the lockups and right-click it. Then select Uninstall . NOTE: Remove all versions of the same program. Sometimes upgrades will not remove old versions of the software before installing the new version. This leaves multiple versions of the same software on your computer.
  4. After removing the problem programs, close the Control Panel.
  5. Restart the computer.
  6. Re-install the program following the vendor's instructions

upgrade your CD/DVD firmware from MAC website and install it.
if it does same even upgrading driver then most could be problem in optical lens so better taking back in the same place where you bought it from if its still under warranty.

or if its out of warranty then you need to take to Tech so they can fix it for you.

please post back if anything changes and rate all answers.

To defrag your hard drive go to , start menu --> all programs --> accessories --> system tools --> disk defragment --> then select your hard drive and click defragment. This can take a few hours depending on how big your hard drive is and how much stuff you got. This may not even speed up your system. if your computer is running slow go to task manager and go to the proccesses tab and check if there is any unnessesary proccess running, if so just end them. write down the name of it and then delete it from your computer if you dont need it. :) hope that works. :)
