Regarding the bleak streak, that is dirt inside the printer , the printer need to be cleaned inside.

Regarding the upgrade error , when that happen you need to Call HP Support .

Try first unplugging printer power cable for ten minutes, if that did not work , call HP, they will send you a patch to fix the error, see below:

I would say its about time for a new printer.....if its leaving a black line all the way down the side of the page it usually means the black carrier is going bad.

Take out the toner and give the cartridge a good shaking... put it back in and try it.

Welcome to Fixya! You need to Clean the Print Head. Take some Alcohol and a Q tip and remove the Print Cartridges. Clean the Electronic Heads under these and then Clean the Contacts on the Cartridges. If this does not work, Let me know!

Perform maintenance on the printer, the hp toolbox that came with the printer. Aling the cartridges, clean the print head and all other options you have there.

Streaks:Cleaning interior

Start a print from tray 1/manual feed and just as the trailing edge of paper is entering the machine; quickly open it to stop print and take out the cartridge and look at it

Black ink streak on left side of paper on hp 1012, just put in new toner

Run a half test.
Put paper in the manual feed tray(tray 1).
Send a print job to printer. When the paper gets 3/4 of the way into the printer, open the cover. Pull out the toner cartridge, look down at the sheet inside the printer. Does it have the streak on the left side? If yes...your toner cartridge is bad. If no...replace the fuser.

Horz. streak approx.3/4 down on each page I print

Sounds like some of the magenta toner is left behind on the drum. The only way to fix it is to get a new cartridge.

Black Streaks on Edges of Paper

This can be one of two

Print cartridge (you can do it, replace toner cartridge)

or Fuser (needs to go to doctors)

stop a print half way threw to confirm that it is print cartridge, good chance it is.

Vertical streak near left edge of printouts....only affects black portion of print image

Where best to look will depend a little on the nature of the smudge. If what you're looking at is white, then you might just have a little heap of toner or paper dust on part of the LED array that paints the picture onto the photoconductor drum (look for a narrow unit that stretches full width, adjacent to the drum. Dark marks may, if you're lucky, be down to dirt on charger wires. Both respond well to cleaning with a vacuum and a soft cloth (be very gentle if cleaning the wires). I would be inclined to trust the existing photoconductor unit unless you know it's been abused (e.g. by leaving it lying around in daylight) or the coating on the drum is visibly damaged. A.
