Does the code say bad rich or lean? If rich, you may have a bad fuel regulator located under the intake manifold. If lean, a bad vacuum leak, but since there is a smell of gas it probably is rich.

How do i know if a oxygen sensor is bad verses CAM

Neither have anything to do with each other. The cam sensor is used to fire the injectors. The O2 sensors is for fuel mileage and to monitor the catalytic converter. If the O2 sensor is bad it will throw O2 codes and maybe a cat code (420). If the cat is bad, then only P0420. If the cam is bad it will set a cam code, but the ECM will go in default mode and still run the engine. Bad gas mileage, yes, But will still run. Best way to check a cat is remove the O2 sensor closest to the engine or loosen the exhaust flange. If it runs better, the cat is clogged up. Have the codes checked..

Will a bad oxygen sensor give me bad gas mileage in my 07 pacifica with the 4.0L engine. Will hhoking it up to a computer give me any indication that it is bad.

Bad 02 sensor will give bad mileage, as car is starving for air, sometimes computers will not detect if it is bad, slot of simple performance problems results from 02 sensors, fuel filters, dirty injectors, poor fuel, dirty air filters. Those are some the main things to look at for best fuel mileage and performance. Hope this helped, please let me know. Thanks, mike from fixya

wont help but taking that cat off will also if your running rich truck needs less fuel more air check air filter....cutting that catylitic off depends on where u are check the law.....but that will improve mileage alot ...so would dual exhaust....BTW all the O2 sensor does is tell u when its out of wack so cant see it being the problem if no engine light warnings...

I have five codes P2237 P2196 P2271 P0030 P0171 and a P2237 pending code on a 2005 elantra. The car runs poorly, bad gas mileage, sluggish with the check engine light on.Are all O2 sensors bad or maybe the...

P2237 P2196 P2271 P0030 P0171

These are all O2 sensor trouble codes, except P0171 which is a fuel trim code,

You have a bad 02 sensor - up stream - Bank 1 Sensor 1.

Replace it, then road test. The engine computer has a 'default' fuel trim it uses when an O2 sensor fails so it can protect the catalytic converter. If this hasn't been going on too long, good chance simply replacing the O2 sensor will remedy your problem.

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STAYS ON. WAS TOLD IT WAS THE 02 SENSOR/VALVE. WHERE DO I FIND THIS? GMC SIERRA 1500

You should have 5, O2 sensors on your Sirera. What are the DTC codes, each codes will indicate which O2 sensor needs to be addressed, or is this an answer with someone guess what the check engine light is saying.
Thye check engine light could be from a bad O2 sensor to just a bad or loose gas cap to a transmission issues.
Thank you for using fixya and note that Auto Zone and most larger auto parts store will scan DTC codes free of charge.

O2 sensor engine light stays on, smell gas in kia as it warms up on cold days

o2 sensor is probably bad and so the car is unable to make proper adjustments to the air/fuel ratio. What you likely smell is your car running rich, meaning there is too much gas for the amount of air the engine is taking it resulting in gas that is getting burned completely and is going out through the exhaust. Is probably going to decrease your gas mileage. You should probably get the o2 sensor checked out.

02 sensor

Your gas mileage will suffer. You may notice a funny exhaust smell. Engine may also run a bit rougher than it normally would.

95 caddlilac seville STS getting horrible fuel economy.

You will see shorter service life of those O2 sensors with that kind of mileage. I would also suspect that the injectors are seriously worn if original. a few things to also look at that tend to throw 02 codes:

1: MAP OR MAS sensors,
2. worn timing chain
3: Restricted air intake (filter, or leak between MAS sensor and Intake)
4: Engine coolant thermostat (if the engine never warms fully, the mixture will be overly rich)

The O2 sensors tend to get wiped out by too much or too little fuel, too much in your case. you have to find the problem of fuel delivery or it will kill any O2 sensors you replace.

Have you performed a compression check? in some cases the piston, or rings have failed and allowed a large amount of fuel to enter the crankcase oil.
