Polaroid TLA-01511c Backlights go out

Hi everyone... I've been told that the inverter on this TV is on the PSU board and to replace the capacitors. Can anyone tell me which caps to replace? Board position number or what to look for. I don't see any "puffy" capacitors or any sign of a bad one.

I went over both boards with a jeweler's loop. Couldn't see anything abnormal. I don't have any way of checking the capacitors while they're on the board. Still puzzled.

  • Berryn Jan 20, 2009

Replaced all capacitors on the power board (PSU). I read a post saying that this model combined the inverter board and the PSU. None tested defective and TV does exactly what it did before. Comes on for a few seconds then the backlights go out. Sound is still there and when shining a flashlight into the dark screen I can make out the images. The only other board I can find is the main board where all the hook-ups are and the thin flat board on the screen, no inverter board... or is there a separate inverter board for this model?

Hi Berryn,
Your Inverter is in fact built into the power supply, there is a small transformer near where the backlight plugs into the power supply that needs to be checked, if you find no disfigured caps on the board you may want to replace the power supply.
The part number is  200-001-XXXXTLTX-AH
I was unable to find the supply from my vendors but there are a couple on Ebay, this one is gauranteed for 30 days, http://cgi.ebay.com/POLAROID-200-001-XXXXTLTX-AH-TLA-01511C-TV-POWER-SUPPLY_W0QQitemZ170295627068QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item170295627068&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72:1205|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318|301:1|293:1|294:50
Let me know how it goes. Lone99star

I fixed my dead FLM-2632 by replacing the large black 150uf 450 volt power supply capacitor. I used a $4.09 Digi-key PN P14080-ND 420 volt 150UF Cap since I only power the TV on 110 vac. ( http://digikey.com. )The Rubycon 450 volt 150 uf Cap is no longer manufactured because it has poor life in a high ripple current switching power suppy application like used in many TVs. If you are not experienced in soldering, don't attrmpt this repair on your own. You have to cut the leads on the old Cap before you can carefully pry the old cap loose from the RTV. Use solder wick to clean the terminals before installing the new Cap.

If the TV "Comes on for a few seconds then the backlights go out." , and you keep having picture and sound with not backlight, then it is likely the inverter.

If TV comes on, then goes off after seconds, test minor boards, and replace the main unit, on this TV it is all built on digital board.

Inverters that are built in the PSU board are not common, and are considered not serviceable. That means that fyou should replace the whole board.

To test the inverter, you need to test the oscillators on inverter board , read voltages, and test the frequency.

A full test on a malfunctioning inverter may be difficult, we usually replace the inverter.

Here is the part : 200-000-XXXXTLTX-AH

The left half of the picture is PSU, with PSU caps under the metal plate. Left side is inverter, converting back DC to high voltage AC.

When you are checking the capactors ... you actually need to put your finger on the top of each one (with the power off of course) to check them.... any that feel swelled at the top are bad and need to be replaced.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

While the capacitor as chapli has posted would be one possibility, there are other components on this board that may be responsible for inverter failure. It could very well be that the output of the PSU besides it is not reaching the inverter section hence no inverter out.

Still, if you suspect the capacitor then there would only be 2 capacitor on the inverter section on the right side of the board. Blue & black.Polaroid TLA-01511c Backlights go out - 081a775.jpg
Yet you may want to consider board replacement rather than component level repair.
Pls post back result(s). Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

The capacitors on the meter has to be checked with a device called mulimeter as if you r not been able to find the puffy capacitors on the board.as sometimes its also due to loose soldering joints of thev capacitor and dry soldering whole board solves the problem.get the board checked with a multimeter if dry soldering does not helps.you can get the required capacitors at radioshack websites.

It would be simpler and cheaper to replace the board than trying to chase down diodes and bad capasiters,,,they are not very expensive

Also see for any bulged capacitors or leaky capasitors or which 1 has got burned slightly.also checking with a meter will help to get the faulty on the board.

Screen is white when you turn it on but you can hear the audio. after a while it comes on

On older tube televisions this was referred to as the "warm in period". You don't get that on newer LCD as there is no tube to warm. SO, what you've got here is a growing problem with your LCD inverter board or your backlights. Both can be repaired rather easily (and cheaply) at most television repair shops. I've seen a lot of this on polaroid sets, and it almost always gets much worse very quickly. Eventually the TV will refuse to turn on. My recommendation is to get to the repair shop right away!

Check the powersupply/inverter board for bad capacitors. Also check the CCFL bulbs in the top and bottom for poor solder connection - replace if necessary.
