Question about Heating & Cooling

Open Question

Our DESA Comfort Glow propane logs (Mod.# CHL3924PR) and firebox (Mod.# HDFB32C) have produced a foul, chemical odor since installing in 2004. We have used them infrequently but more than enough to dissipate any normal "burn-off" fumes from a new installation. There is no soot residue, no gas leaks (not the same smell anyway), and our carbon monoxide alarm has never sounded except when testing. Our other propane logs (much older, not sure of brand) have never had any odor. The installation instructions were followed to the letter. Can you offer any explanation or advice for correcting this problem?

Thanks for all the input. I purchased the log and firebox new which was labeled LP so don't think I need a conversion kit but anything is possible. The odor is persistent well after the normal seasonal dust burn-off so don't think it is that. Sounds like it must be a combustion issue so will be calling a technician. Just learned that DESA is out of business as I tried to contact their tech support. Thanks for your help.

How can I adjust the flame? I have the CGCFTP and one side of the flame is higher (alot) than the other side. It's burning the top of the metal insert.

Normally, you can raise and lower the flame height, with the Control Knob (Wider the white stripe the higher the flames. Narrower the stripe, the lower the flames). But, I don't think that's your problem. From your description, it sounds like the burner may be clogged or there is a air shutter control problem on the open end of the burner. This controls the air to gas ratio. Also, depending on the age of this Compact Classic Firebox and whether or not annual maintenance was preformed regularly, the burner may be shot entirely. Since DESA International, who made the Comfort Glow line for Lowe's, went out of business in 1999, we know the heater is at least 2 years old, minimum. Although, I suspect yours is an older model, based on the Model Number you provided. If you feel comfortable troubleshooting it yourself, I have provided a link to your Owner's Manual, in case you have misplaced yours. You can down load and print it for future, as well as for any parts you may need.

If you don't feel comfortable repairing it yourself, contact your propane provider. As most propane providers also do service and repair for this type of Vent-free Gas Fireplace.

Hope this helped to steer you in the right direction.

I need replacement logs for a Desa Model CGFB32CA. No one lists the log numbers, including the manual. Where can I get the item number?

As you probably already know, DESA International is no longer in business. However, depending on the age of your unit, some parts are still available, as is the Owners Manual. The parts for Comfort Glow gas logs (which is what you have. And probably purchased them from Lowe's some years ago) are interchangeable with DESA's Vanguard line.

You can find what you're looking for at www.desatech.com. However, don't be shocked by the price of the replacement logs.

I bought a comfort glow vent-less space heater model # CJ18NL. It had a natural gas valve on it and the guy said I could put on a propane valve, which I did. It's not lighting. Is this model only good...

According to the Comfort Glow Website, this is a Natural Gas unit. If you use propane you will need
a minumum 100# LP Cylinder and a pressure regulator. I have a Comfort Glow unit and went through the same process.

If you have it hooked up to a 30lb cylinder without a regulator I would think that if you purged the gas line
of air you should be able to light the pilot.

On a new unit you can expect to push the spark ignitor button at least a dozen times while holding
down the gas valve button.

Good Luck

The pilot on my Comfort Glow Gas Logs CLD3924PTA won't stay lit. Can anyone help me with this problem??? Thanks

You must have some kind of flame sensor and it sounds as though it is not working correctly. If the pilot lights and then goes off, I would look there first. Good luck...Lee

If you have a pilot, you have a thermocouple. I would start with the thermocouple. The thermocouple is supposed to be heated by the piolet and to keep the pilot gas on. If it is faulty, the pilot will quit and the heater will not reignite until you light it again. Good luck...Lee

Have Model CGP30TB Copmfort Glow propane heater. Pilot light won't stay lit. Flames also coming from what seem to be air vents just below flame on pilot light.

sounds like an obstruction in pilot assembly.try using canned compressed air to blow directly into pilot. this technique is successful about 70%. if not, pilot assembly must be removed and cleaned thorougly
