Question about Garden
Try running your mower without the gas cap, without mowing of course. The breather on the cap might be malfunctioning. Change cap. It is creating a vacuum.

I would agree with the gas cap being the problem. There should be a insert inside the cap which helps with the tap pressure. If this is lost then the engine will run for a few min. and shut off.
There is one other thing and that is the float in the carb bowl. It may be allowing in just enough gas to fill the bowl and then it is sticking. This would account for just enough fuel to run for a brief period and then shut down.

SOURCE: Riding lawnmower wont run long
Check for dirt in gas tank some times stuff will fall in when filling and block the hole in bottom of gas tank and wont let gas flow clean everything out and see if it works. Also check that all kill switches are tight and not moving.
