What's the best flavor of ice cream?

The best settings depend on what you're taking a picture of, and on what you want that picture to say to your audience. The best setting for a mountain landscape is usually not the best setting for a portrait. For the same mountain landscape, you'd probably want different settings for a daytime picture than for a sunset picture. For a portrait, you might want different settings for a man than for a woman, or for a child than for an adult. You might want to bring out the fun-loving nature of a child, or show the dignity of age in the child's grandparent.

If you're just taking snapshots, leave the camera on AUTO or an appropriate scene mode. Otherwise, go to your local library and browse through the introductory photography books. There's so much more than can be covered in a single post, or even a single web page.

Most important, practice, practice, PRACTICE. Take pictures with different settings, then look at them on the computer and try to see what difference the settings made. Those pictures won't cost you anything, and you can delete them afterwards.

If you have any specific situations in mind, with the subject, lighting conditions, and intended message, please feel free to reply to this post and give the details.

My child broke the disk that came with camera. I tried to go online at aries and get a download. this didn't work now i'm stuck with a aries picture on the my computer screen that i can't delete. can you...

Under the circumstances, best solution is to do the system restoring.
Go to My Computer Click System properties. Select System restore and follow instructions therein. NOTE you select the system restore date/point before you downloaded Aries program. Once the action is completed you will find that your computer has been restored to a point before you downloaded Aries. The down loaded program will not be there.

Deleted photos

When items are deleted (or card formatted) on the media card, it doesn't really wipe the card, it just removes the indexes, thereby making the space available for future use.

All is not lost UNTIL you overwrite the card with new data.

If the card is freshly deleted.... meaning that no new data write activity has occurred since the deletion, then you can usually recover the pictures by using commercial products such as "Undelete".

These work by recreating the indexes, and are usually very effective if the card has not been subsequently used / overwritten.

Costs and results vary - but if you look up "undelete software" on google, you will be offered an array of possibilities - from freeware (no cost) through to around $50.

First thing to do is to stop using that card until your recovery has been performed.

Photo shops (camera stores, or processors) see this kind of error most days, and will be able to sort you out, if it all seems too daunting.

Hope this helps

After we downloaded my childs fisher price digital

You don't say what programs you're trying to use to view the pics. Why not create a folder on your desktop and drag and drop the pics into it. Then, double-click the folder and on the left hand side of the window, choose slide show. They should play.

I accidentally deleted a video

you may get software to try and look for the deleted files (if they were actually written to the SD in the first place) the data in files are usually not deleted until something write over the data. its only marked as free space.

but if it is lost. dont be upset. you will end up with many many hours of videos and pictures of your child :) one single lost xmas video will mean nothing in the long run

Can i turn it off?

It should turn off after 60 seconds of inactivity however the type or memory in the camera is called volatile memory and it requires a charge to store data. So even if the display is blank if you have pictures on the camera it will be pulling a charge from the battery. The best thing to do would be to download the pictures from the camera as soon as you can so that the pictures stored in the memory aren't pulling a charge from the battery.
