Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
The service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
Good luck!

It decides for itself when to work or not. Plug in, no power. When it works it can function for a while but just suddenly shut down and doesn't go on again like I want it too.

A lot of external drives have a "sleep" mode that triggers after a few minutes of idle time, which can appear to be "off". If you are not seeing power (is there an indicator light?) then check the cables connecting the AC power adapter. Maybe the connectors are dirty and not making a clean electric connection.

First, please disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps:

Click "Start" button, type "devmgmt.msc" (without quotation marks) in the "Search" bar and press "Enter". Click "Continue" if necessary.

In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the Host Controller, click "Uninstall" and click "OK".

Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".

Then, restart your computer and Windows 7 will reinstall all USB controllers automatically.

for xp

click start control panel administrative tools computer management device manager scroll down universal serial bus controllers you could see a yellow question / exclamation mark? ! or a red X

you will need to update/reinstall drivers

right click to reinstall drivers

if you can see your usb but its not working

ports(com&lpt)right click update driver

sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable

just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again,

if you can see your usb drive but its not working

ports (com&lpt) right click update driver if this fails to fix the problem

check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red white green black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems to a computer and its parts

if this fails to fix the problem

you might have to install a new usb 3 card they are cheap and easy to install you can buy these on Ebay very cheap

hope this helps

I have the My book Essential 3tb WD drive and windows 7 laptop. It used to work perfectly except that there was a problem with spark coming out of the usb which was replaced by WD and I even got a...

There are several free data recovery softwares that can get data off of drives that Windows explorer won't touch. Check out: If you don't mind voiding the warranty, you CAN take it out of the enclosure and try connecting it to another computer, but I really think the encryption is going to prevent this.
The only other option would be to send the drive off to a data recovery specialist which is usually extremely effective, but can be very costly (starting around $400).

The 3TB/TO My Book Essential with USB 3.0 that I purchased at Costco did not have a CD included. I tried a number of times to get it started with my MacBook and when I click the prompt button to...

Try this page for the My Book Essentials USB 3.0 downloads: . The CD is on the hard drive as a virtual CD for most of the Western Digital My Books. When the drive is plugged into the computer, it should be recognized and then you can access the drive in the Finder. Then you will find the contents of the CD. If you want to use the WD software, for example, double-click on the icon.

If your MacBook hasn't recognized the drive being attached, then you need to fix that problem. Are the USB ports working for other (known good) devices? If you can, try a different cable between the drive and the computer. Try powering on the drive and connecting it to the computer when the computer is off. Then turn on the computer. (There are some reports of the energy-savings features causing the drive to fail to be recognized by the controller when attached when the computer is on.)

I hope this helps.
