Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

We have recently bought a Philips Rear Projection TV. It is used, though in good condition when we viewed it prior to bringing it home. Upon setting it up, we found that the color was severely off and there was a double image. Come to find out the projection screen was bent during travel, and the color lights on the inside moved (we think). After bending the screen close to its original screen and repositioning the lights, we've corrected most of the double image - but it's still noticeably off in color. No matter what setting, the we cannot correct it, or the slight double image that remains. This is a particularly large system, so we would like for it to look as good as originally intended.

Convergence point problem on a Philips TV

The 55pp9352 model number uses 2 of the STK-392-120 convergence chips--if it will not adjust in some direction--both chips and any of the 6.8 ohm resistors around them that are bad need to be replaced.

The reason this happens is the chips are about 2 1/2 inches wide X 1 1/2 inches tall with a metal back--they are attached to separate metal heat sinks and a white grease is applied to each to transfer heat quickly---after several years the heat sink grease dries out and one of the chips cannot stay cool enough and fails.

Pretty common problem in ALL rear projection sets--if model is 55pp, it is 55 inch set.

You can buy the chips on Ebay for less than 12 dollars---the resistors if needed are cheap parts.

It depends if you are able to do the repair yourself or need to have someone do it for you--most shops get at least 300 for this kind of repair--considering the parts cost less than 20 dollars if you can do it yourself you can save a lot of money.

Any good tech can do this repair in your home in about 1 hour--I know as I have done hundreds of them.

If you need help or advice let me know--I am here to help people.

Not a good clear picture.

I have a philips magnavox and had two problems that I recently fixed using kits from www.TvRepairKits.com. I can't say enough about their kits and help. Without them I would have never been able to fix my TV set myself.

The first problem I had was the TV was looking 3D. After doing some homework I found out that this is a convergence problem. I bought a kit, followed the instructions, and to my amazement fixed it myself.

After building my confidence with the 1st repair I decided to get their CRT fluid kit. This kit fixes the dull video, red video, or bright/halo looking video. If you have a magmavox set that is more than 5 years old your tv has this problem already. It happens on every set. As before I bought the kit, followed the instructions, and now my video looks factory new. Once again I wanted to say thanks to the team at Tv Repair Kits for putting together kits that the average joe can use.

The quick answer to you problem is critical in what your set was doing prior to it shutting down. Do you remember it having a Color problem like alignment of convergence? Was the sound cutting out on you? Or was there part of the picture missing? If one of these then you could eliminate time and money. To be honest you would save money DIY. You also can call PTS at 18008447871 and get the price on Deflection board or Large Signal, whichever has High Voltage Transformer on it and price. This will save time troubleshooting, because it takes the knowledge of knowing voltages, components, etc. Which require skills the average person may not have. Hope this helps!

Tilted tv screen

The complete convergence for the Philips projection sets usually requires a clear plastic overlay which fits over the screen and has many precisely spaced black dots. The remote is then used to enter the service mode and converge all 3 colors onto the dots, and then the settings are stored in an EPROM IC. This should only be done by someone with experience with the Philips sets.

I'd really like to see what you're describing here, but it sounds as though the SSB (small signal baord) is failing, Philips p/n#Ph3912725871 It's a vertical board on the left side viewed from the rear of the unit. It's clearly one for the shop... Good Luck Bill
