Strange, Netgears are pretty easy to set up. Try holding the reset button in for at least 20 seconds, and see if you can ping 192.168.1.1. You did plug a PC into the router and turn off the wireless?

Even in default the Netgear is supposed to give out DHCP addresses, so you can do an ipconfig and see whether that happened after you set the network card to Obtain Automatically.

The setup instructions for the router tell you to plug your pc into one of the 4 LAN ports, do not plug anything into the WAN port, and set your IP address in the network card to any address like 192.168.1.2-254, the mask to 255.255.255.0 and you don't need a gateway. Then open up a browser and go to 192.168.1.1, and login using admin and password.

Did you miss any of the above steps?

Resetting the router gives you a chance to set it up. Go to www.routerlogin.com or 192.168.1.1 after it says limited or no connectivity and set it up with the wizard.

Here are some troubleshooting steps that I suggest you try:

1. Check physical connections.

a. Connect the modem to the Internet port of the router. The Internet “i” LED on the front of the router should light up.
b. Connect the computer to one of the four LAN ports (i.e port 1, 2, 3 or 4) on the back of the router. The corresponding port light where you connected the computer should be lit up.

2. Access the router's web-based utility.

a. Please open any web browser like Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.
b. Connect to the router by typing http://routerlogin.com/basicsetting.htm or http://192.168.1.1 in the address field and click Enter or Return key.
c. A window will prompt for a user name and password. By default, the user name is "admin" and the password is "password".

Note: If you were unable to access the router's web-based utility, you may reset the router to restore the settings to factory default.

To reset the router:

a. Please push the reset button at the back of the router and release after 30 seconds.
b. Unplug the power adapter for 10 seconds and then plug it back in.

3. Configure the router.

a. Click on Basic Settings.
b. Select Yes for Does Your Internet Connection Require A Login?.
c. Select Other on the Internet Service Provider drop down box.
d. Enter your ISP's username (username@ISPdomain) and password. Then, click on Apply.

4. Configure the wireless settings.

a. Click on the Wireless Settings under Setup.
b. Change the SSID to any unique name.
c. Scroll down, look for the Security Options settings and select WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy).
d. Set the Authentication type to "Automatic" and the Encryption Strength to "64bit".
e. Leave the Passphrase field blank, select Key 1 and enter a 10-digit number.

Note: The 10-digit number you typed in the key 1 will be the password or network key for the wireless connection.

f. Click Apply button to save the changes.
g. Go to Router Status under Maintenance tab and check if there is an IP address under Internet port. If it's 0.0.0.0, do a power cycle.

5. Power cycle.

a. Power off the modem, router and computers.
b. Turn on the power of the modem first and wait for it to initialize, the lights to stop blinking.
c. Power back the router and the computers. Check if it will be able to get online.

I tried connecting to my wireless and cant remember the password. how do I reset it

You could try to go to the default IP address which is usually somewhere on the back on underneath the router.if it's netgear it usually goes to 192.168.0.1 then you need to log in the default user pass which is admin admin but sometimes with capital A.you can google most router ip addresses and user pass to get to the setup page of the router.if you can't there is also a reset button somewhere on the router.you will need a safety pin or needle to hold it in for at least three seconds?the router will reset but you may need to reconfigure the settings to your ISP.

Well it seems that you have uploaded the firmware on the router using wireless connection. The firmware on the router has corrupted and now does not seem to be recoverable.

Dude if it is under warranty then get it replaced. To log a complaint with NETGEAR go to this site:

Can't retrieve WEP code

If the default username and password is not working, try your commonly use username and password coz there's a possibility that you already change it but if it still not working better reset the router.
To reset it juts press and hold teh reset button of the router using a pen then after that you need to reconfigure it back and you should be able to access the setup page of it using "admin" as the username and password.
Hope it helps..

No connection trough router

Hi Thumbsucker,

Oftentimes with Netgear routers, before an Internet connection can be established, you'll need to run the Wizard setup routine on the router itself. Many other manufacturers don't require this, but if you're connecting to a PPPoE connection (such as DSL) then the Netgear requires said basic setup.

On the bottom of the router itself you'll see some information. It'll tell you the default IP address (such as 192.168.0.1) and a basic username and password (the default for most Netgear routers is admin for the username and password for the password). Plug your computer into one of the four switch ports on the router (not the uplink/Internet port) and type in the IP address of the router (again, such as 192.168.0.1) into your Web Browser (such as Internet Explorer). If it asks for a username/password then punch in the info given on the bottom of the router. At that point you should be able to answer the basic questions to get you online.

There is a chance that your modem and your router have the same IP address; in that case, you'll need to manually change the IP address on the router.

If by chance you can't get into the router via the information provided on the bottom of the device, take a paper clip and, with the router powered up, hold in the reset button for 30 full seconds. This will reset the device to its default factory settings.

can you tell me the ip address of the rangemax router?
whats the ip address of the 3rd pc?

Thanks,

Reset

You can reset your Netgear router/wireless wpn824 router to the factory settings from within the router manager. The reset procedure removes all user-configured settings and returns the router to the original factory settings.

For this reason, only reset the router if you encounter problems that can't be solved with other methods.

Step 1: Check that your Netgear router/wireless wpn824 router is properly connected with your system or not. If it is OK, then press reset button on Netgear router for at least 10 seconds. The 'test' light should flash during this process.

Step 2: Now open browser and enter Netgear's IP address into the address bar. Generally, '192.168.0.1' is the Netgear router IP address but you can find specific IP address in Netgear wpn824 router manual.

Step 3: Now enter your default username and password to log in to router.

Step 4: Click 'Erase' button under the 'Revert to Factory Default Settings'. This process will erase all your previous changes that have been made to the router and restore the configuration settings to factory setting. Don't interrupt the process until the process is finished.

Once the router's 'test' light has stopped blinking and the configuration page you are on has refreshed, the wpn824 router has been reset.

Feel free to get instant online Netgear router

Still can't get access to the Router

Hi,

By your post/description that the wizard starts @ 192.168.1.1 and it can identify your Internet Connection indicates that chances are, there is nothing wrong with your Netgear RangeMax WPN824 Router. Clicking on the Next tab does not make your browser go to the subsequent page is perhaps a problem with your browser and not with the router. You can try tweaking your browser:
• In Mozilla, click on Tools, Options, Advanced tab, Network tab, Settings button, tick "Auto-detect proxy settings for this connection, OK, OK;
• In IE, Tools, Internet Options, Connections tab, LAN settings button, check "Automatically detect settings", OK, Advance tab, check Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections.
• In Opera, Tools, Preferences, Advanced tab, Network, Proxy server buttons, check "Enable HTTP 1.1 for proxy, OK, OK.

Alternately if this doesn’t work, try manually configuring your PC’s Network settings:
Click on Start, Control Panel, Network Connection, right click on the networking icon (that is used to connect to the router; WiFi or LAN). Click on Properties button, highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click on properties button (mid right). In the General tab:
• tick "Use the following IP address"
• Enter values as shown below -
IP address: 192.168.1.201 (201 can be any number from 2-254 that is not in used by any other PC in your Network)
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS servers: as provided by your ISP
click on OK, OK, Close.

Additionally, you can try right clicking on the Networking icon (bottom right side) in your Systems Tray and click on Repair.

Worst case is you try and do a hard reset of your Netgear RangeMax WPN824 Router by pressing the small Reset button at the back or bottom for a couple of seconds or till the LEDs flashes. Pls be reminded that a full/hard reset will revert all router’s configuration to factory default.

Should you still need the setup files, they are available at the NetGear site here (depending on the version number). Further manuals, instructions and other documents for this router is available here.

Hope that this be of some help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.
