SOURCE: the starter rope broke on my Toro mower and the

I cannot believe that someone suggested grinding off the rivets. If the bottom portion of the rivet falls down and gets caught by the magnet on your flywheel and you try to start it you are going to do some SERIOUS damage.

Here is the instructions DIRECT FROM BRIGGS & STRATTON:

This is a relatively simple process, but you have to be VERY careful when doing this. The spring is long, under some tension and has sharp edges. Anytime you are dealing with the manual rewind starter assembly, there is risk of the spring coming out and possibly injuring yourself or others. If you do not feel comfortable performing this repair, I strongly suggest visiting one of our many authorized dealers in your area and have them do this for you.
You will have to remove the gas tank2.gif to get at the rewind and blower housing. Remove the entire blower housing and rewind assembly and turn it upside down.
NOTE:You do not have to drill out the rivets to get to the back of the rewind assembly. This is only necessary if you are removing the ENTIRE rewind assembly, (metal housing and all) and are separating it from the blower housing.
You'll need a pair of vise grips or a screw driver, some rewind rope, a long thin sharp tip flexible object (the wire from a coat hanger may work) and a lighter handy.

  1. Take the pulley and start to turn it so that the rope becomes loose.
  2. Remove the rope.
  3. Once the pulley is all the way out, with the most tension, either use the screwdriver between the spokes of the pulley, or use the vise grips to hold the pulley in place; be careful not to place too much pressure on the vise grips, the plastic pulley may break!
  4. Make sure that the hole in the pulley lines up with the hole on the rewind assembly.
  5. Using the wire from the coat hanger, push the rope through the hole of the rewind and pulley. Pull the rope through the pulley and tie it off. Now use the lighter to burn the end of the rope to prevent the not from coming off.
  6. Now, remove the screwdriver or vise grips, while holding on to the pulley.
  7. SLOWLY let go of the pulley and the rope should feed back into the pulley as you do this.

SOURCE: starter rope broke how do i replace it

You have to remove the whole engine air shroud over the flywheel to gain access to the recoil and rope mechanism. If you need specific help on your exact model engine I need all of engine model type numbers 5 to 6 char then 4 char then 2 char i.e XXXXXX-YYYY-ZZ for B & S Honda numbers are by the engine oil port on the base of the crank case. Replace recoil starter on my craftsman 26 in snowblower model # 247889720

You didn't say what the specific problem is. If the rope does not return properly the best move would be to replace the housing that holds the starter. If the rope broke you will need to pull the housing off to replace it. This is a bit of a challenge because you need to rotate the spool against the spring enough times to wind up the rope when you release it and still manage to attach the rope. You may find it better to replace the housing as these springs can get weak over time.

How do I replace the starter (pull) rope on a toro ccr2450 (model 38413)?

Although it looks like you simply un-bolt the recoil starter you need remove the whole blower (flywheel) housing as there are nuts on the back side.
  • Once the housing is off, remove the broken rope and prepare a length of rope to replace it base upon the old ropes length. Probably close to 6 feet.Don't forget to put the pull handle on the new rope.
  • Tighten the recoil pulley in the direction it normally turns as you pull the rope out until it stops.
  • Slowly back of up to one turn to align the hole in the pulley with the housing hole and hold it in that position while you insert the rope and try a sturdy knot.
  • Slowly let recoil assembly pull the rope back in and test that it is working properly before re-installing the housing.
  • Once you are satisfied that the recoil is working properly re-install the remaining covers.

Recoil starter assembly

If you can post the engine make, model and serial number I can get a diagram for you. They are usually stamped in the engine housing. Start by removing bolts to remove cover and check spring. If spring is good you should be able to rewind. You will need to cut rope by handle and pull rope up between spindle and inner housing, rewind rope in direction of pull. Let it rewind while holding tip of rope. When satisfied with tension, push end of rope back through hole in cover and reattach handle. This can be tricky. I am thinking of posting a video of this procedure. Let me know if you have more question's.Good luck.

Pullstart cable broke

Remove nuts mounting recoil assembly. Observe how rope is wound around pulley. Find end knot in pulley wheel. Cutoff end knot and remove old rope. Find end knot in handle, use needle nose pliers pull thru old rope. Rope is sold by the foot at mower repair shops. Replace rope as observed before removal. Cut to size after wrapping recoil assembly and attaching thru handle at proper length if at recoil assembly or on mower handle. Ensure good knot in hole of recoil assembly and handle.

Lawn mover starter rope replacement

most starters can be taken off the engine and replace the rope without completely tearing the whole unit apart. by that I mean you should not have to mess with the recoil spring unless it is broken. remove old rope from pulley, wind up the pulley and hold it so it wont unwind, replace new rope onto pulley and tie a good knot and melt the ends of the rope so it wont unravel, then slowly let the pulley retract the correct amount of rope. if the recoil spring has unsprung on you, it will take a little time and probably several tries to wind it back up and position it back in the starter. they like to unspring while doing this so take some time and an extra person to hold and assist might go a long ways. good luck.
