The initial problem was broken hinges, then the screen went totally black. Bought a parts computer with a good screen. put on the new screen, but the basic display is black, but i can see icons and items if i look hard enough. this is a mac power book g4 15"
First off where did you buy the replacement screen? Second did that screen also come with new ribbon cables?
If you bought the replacement online and just installed it without reading the instructions or it didn't come with any then you have the reason there.
If you did read the instructions and followed the steps correctly, then did the replacement come with new ribbon cables and connect lines is the next part, because the reason the first screen failed was not only the screens dynamics, but the constant open and closing, bending causes the cables to get worn in the same area and eventually it will tear or just break. And since you stated that the hinges had broke first that automatically says that the screen will fail due to not being able to function as it should. So with that said, and your answer was YES to the new cables, then final step is to retrace your steps when installing. Because you forgot to reconnect something to have the screen light up. If the white light on the screen doesn't light up you will see what you see now.
I suggest you to goto ifixit.com they have a step by step with images to install or replace parts on all Apple portables. Just follow their instructions correctly to find your PowerBook and then use their install steps.
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

manufacturer & model number? seems like the door switch (push button) if there is, is not totally depressed when door is closed. if the door hinge mounting screws are accessible you might be able to realign the door. loosen the screws, temporarily put a spacer to help line up (aligned) before tightening screws. (or tape a thin spacer on door to totally depress the switch)
Difficult to comment but if a laptop comes in for me to repair and the hinge is broken and maybe cabinet damage, I would offer to replace the broken parts and replace the DC jack, if it was faulty. It is part of the service but may not be cheap to repair!
Hinges usually become loose and very rarely break.
Did the laptop work on the power supply but not on battery?
When I opened my laptop this morning my computer won't come on. The screen is totally black. I took out the battery and put it back in ---- still nothing. I plugged it in with the power cord --- nothing! What is wrong with my HP Compaq Presario CQ60?
Nintendo will fix the hinges depending on a few things, first thing would be to determine how the hinges were broken. The hinges are tested before they leave the factory, the only way that they actually break would be because of physical damage/impact. Physical damage is not covered under the manufact warranty so you would get a discounted price depending on if your under warranty or not. Regardless giving them a call and having their techs fix them will be the best bet, not only because you know it will be fixed right and your warranty will start over the day it gets repaired.
We had similar problem. There is a tiny little black plastic arm where the paper comes out of the top. If you're facing the screen, it will be towards the bottom left. I couldn't find it on the parts list, but it's similar to part 118-9754-00 (Multi-purpose tray paper sensor actuator) from the parts list website:http://www.office.xerox.com/userdoc/P780/partslist/index.html. . We had broken that part when we moved and thought little of it until we got the hanging initialization. Check to see that it moves freely and is not broken. It was a pricey part for what it was, so you might look at a salvaged part. Hope that's the problem as it is an easy repair! If that doesn't do it, we had a door that didn't make good contact that also caused similar problem. Good luck!
