You can download the software for free from www.hp.com - Go to www.hp.com - click on support and drivers - type in the printer name i.e c4180 - now it will show you the name of the printer click on that - now you will see a screen where it has download software and drivers, click on it - select operating system mac or windows and then download full version software
Go-to "printers and faxes" in your "start" menu.Click on your printer only once and in the left column is "printing preferences".Click that and then pull up "features".At the bottom is "factory defaults" click and follow the directions.Next click the heading "color" and do the "factory defaults" thing again.Lastly,install your color cartridges.Reboot the printer and everything should be good to go.Re-post if you have any problems and we'll try to work them out for you.
Click on Start> Settings/Control Panel> Printers and faxes> Right click on the default printer icon and left click on Properties> under properties you will see Printing references> there you see a option to use black cartridges only select it and apply and ok.
And try to print.
If not whenever you ptint any document you will see the printer where you can make selection of printers, even there you can right click on the printer and choose to print only in black.
