All my USB ports stopped working

I am not sure if one has anything to do with the other but I was scanning and downloading photos. My computer auto updated KB901190. Shortly after my computer locked up. After working on/off reboot and finally getting back up I cannot get my USB ports to operate. I have disabled and reenabled, I tried updating driver, no avail.

    The drivers are properly installed?
Did you try with different devices like use flash, printers, webcam, etc.

Can you install an USB PCI card port to check it is works.?

That kb is just a security update but in case try to unistall that kb and check if the usb ports works again.

ALTERNATE WAY TO TRANSFER PHOTOS TO COMPUTER
If your photos are stored on the memory card, then remove the memory card from the camera and insert it into an USB memory card reader. Connect this USB memory card reader and memory card into the USB port of your working computer. Your computer will see this as an USB Mass Storage Device or an external storage device; you can then open the folder on the memory card and copy the photos to your computer. Memory card reader is a handy device and is inexpensive. You can copy photos from other cameras and you can also download photos off your memory card to someone else's computer without the need of installing any programs.

Try deleting your usb drivers.

Right-click My Computer
Manage
Device Manager
USB Controllers
Delete (Generic USB Hub)
Restart computer
(Windows will auto-install the drivers, on reboot)

Plug your device back in, and see i've it works.

USB ports not working

Method 1: Use Device Manager to scan for hardware changes loadTOCNode(2, 'resolution'); Use Device Manager to scan for hardware changes. After your computer scans for hardware changes, it might recognize the USB device that is connected to the USB port so that you can use the device.

To scan for hardware changes, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.

Note If you are running Windows Vista, click Start, and then use the Start Search box.
  2. Type devmgmt.msc, and then click OK. Device Manager opens.
  3. In Device Manager, click your computer so that it is highlighted.
  4. Click Action, and then click Scan for hardware changes.
  5. Check the USB device to see whether it is working.
If scanning for hardware changes fixed the problem, you are finished. If this method did not fix the problem, go to Method 2.
Method 2: Restart the computer loadTOCNode(2, 'resolution'); If scanning for new hardware did not fix the problem, try restarting the computer. After the computer has restarted, check the USB device to see whether it is working.

If restarting the computer fixed the problem, you are finished. If this method did not fix the problem, go to Method 3.
Method 3: Disable and re-enable the USB controller loadTOCNode(2, 'resolution'); Use Device Manager to disable and re-enable all the USB controllers. This lets the controllers recover the USB port from its unresponsive condition. The USB controllers represent the USB ports in Device Manager.

To disable and re-enable the USB controllers, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.

Note If you are running Windows Vista, click Start, and then use the Start Search box.
  2. Type devmgmt.msc, and then click OK. Device Manager opens.
  3. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.

Note You might have to scroll down the list to find this item.
  4. Right-click the first USB controller under Universal Serial Bus controllers, and then click Uninstall to remove it.
  5. Repeat step 4 for each USB controller that is listed under Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  6. Restart the computer. After the computer starts, Windows will automatically scan for hardware changes and reinstall all the USB controllers that you uninstalled.
  7. Check the USB device to see whether it is working.

My old compaq presario wont read my scan disc

Can you use that port to read any other device? What operating system are you using?Did it work previously?Windows 98 you will have to install drivers.Chances are that old computer has a usb 1.0 so it might not work. However try another device in that port or any usb port on the computer to see if any ports are working.Does your scan disk work on another computer.Have you done a windows update recently.Make sure you try all the above.
Good luck

USB port problem

I would try first of all making sure that all of your drivers are up to date. I am saying this because it is always a good first step, but I am not 100% confident that this will fix it. There are a few updates that are listed as URGENT for your specific computer. The link to your drivers is below. The main one that concerns me is the Intel Chipset Driver located under chipset. This is listed as URGENT and may be a solution to your problem. The chipset is part of the motherboard that can be responsible for controlling your USB ports. If this does not remedy the situation I would contact Dell support for a possible solution.
