Did you install the software/driver? Did windows recognize your scanner in your hardware profile? Don't use the software from HP, It sucks. If the HP software is not working correctly, then Use the one provided my your operating system works great. Go your Control Panel, Printer and other Hardwares and click Scanners, make a shortcut to your task or start menu and Scan Away. For Faxes, etc. import in outlook or other email client, etc.

You may be in the market for a new scanner if simply plugging it in doesn't get it working.

Can I make my HP5300C Scanjet operate on windows 7

Use windows7 Prof or Ultimate
Install XP-mode
Working in XP-mode
Install the sj664 HP software.
Though the USB device HP5300C can be found, the HP scanning software will not yet find the scanner. Because the scanner is shared between W7 and XP.
On the XP-mode taskbar disconnect the USB device HP5300C.
Then start HP Precisionscan and the scanner will function as before.
It is clear why HP does not advise this simple procedure.
Just because they did not present any clue triggered me to try it once more.

Is there a way to run this thing through a usb port if it was set up for parrerl link

Yes, but you have to buy an adaptor for it. What you need to buy is called a bidirectional USB to Parallel adaptor. The "bidirectional" part is important, since you're using a scanner, not a printer.

Google for "bidirectional usb parallel adaptor" shows that they cost between $20 and $30

Using HP 5300C scanner with Windows ME for years.

Are you still on ME? Might be time to step up to XP or vista, nevertheless, try this.. works great on my XP pro and Vista with some tweaking, but straight forward with XP Pro. Good luck! Does it show up in your hardware profiles? What does it say on details when you right click the scanner? When you installed the driver, was it before your plugged in the USB? You may have to uninstall and reinstall it again, this time use the one from HP's website with any patch if applicable.

If you have successfully used it in the past, follow the install prompts and restart.. instead of using the products software, use Windows included scanning program which is much better than the proprietary one designed by HP. As long as you have the proper driver installed your system will know how to apply it.

My hp scanner 5300c scanner has been problematic when installing on two different computers, causing both computers to need repair. Anybody else have a similar experience?

Download and install the latest driver for your scanner. The 5300c Scanjet did not ship with drivers for XP or Vista. A download is required for XP compatibility. Vista or Windows 7 should recognize the scanner without requiring additional software. If the software you are installing is not compatible it can cause issues with the computer. If you are installing from CD please look at the CD to see if it lists your version of Windows.

I am trying to reinstall HP Scanjet 5400c but it keeps telling me it can't initialize, no scanner recognized...WindowsXP.. it worked before, why not now?

I had similar problem with my UMAX scanner on numerous occasions. I now have this pg earmarked for quick reference! may help I don't know for sure but it is an easy test and if it works your good to go!
It is important that you connect the scanner's power and USB cables in the following order:
1. Plug the power adapter cord into the scanner and into an outlet. The scanner's power will then be on.
2. Connect the USB cable to the USB port on the
back or front of the computer.
NOTE: If you unplug the scanner's power ,you must also disconnect the USB cable from the computer. To resume use of the scanner, remove the power card, the the USB cable.

Sounds like a lot but the order is essential!
If it works, High lite Do unplug USB/unplug cable back of scanner/and plug cable back of scanner then USB!
Good Luck Hope this helps!

Scanner lamp its blinking

After disconnecting and later reconnecting the scanner no longer worked. The lamp started flashing 6 times with pause. The scanner was no longer recognised by the computer. I fixed it by disconnecting the usb and current plugs, and reconnecting the current plug while pushing the first en third buttons from the left on the front of the scanner.

Win XP PC does not recognise my SJ 5300C USB scanner

first thing i would do is go to the control panel and see if theres any thing in the camera and scanner profile. Then go to the manufactures site and see if theres an updated driver for the printer. if so download the new driver then see if it recconizes the scanner. if that still does not work then you may have to run it in a different compatability mode. good luck
