Under the sink you will probably find an electrical outlet with the disposal cord plugged in. If so, plug another item into the outlet like a blow dryer to be sure you have power to the outlet. If you have no power the problem is a tripped breaker or a blown fuse. First check all of the plugs in the kitchen area including under the sink to determine if you have a ground fault circuit interrupter outlet. If you do, it may be tripped. If it is tripped simply reset it.

If you know you have power to the disposal then check to be sure no spoon or other hard object isn't in the disposal preventing it from operating. Use a flash light to check this. If there is no obstruction look on the case of the disposal for a reset button. good luck.

How do I reset the disposal?

The question is too broad, but I will try to help. Assuming this is a kitchen garbage disposal, the unit is designed to shut off if the cutting wheel gets jammed.
1. Turn off the wall or cabinet power switch.
2. Remove any objects inside the disposal opening and ensure the cutting wheel moves freely.
3. Locate a square button on the bottom of the disposal and press.
4. Run water into the disposal and turn on the wall/cabinet power switch.

When disposal turn on it flips the broker

The motor might have a short because disposal has rusted out and water is getting into disposal. Or the switch might have short.

Check switch for signs of burning and high heat. Replace switch. Replace disposal.

Garbage disposal

My checklist for garbage disposals:
(1) most disposals have a little red RESET switch on the bottom. Once the impeller will turn manually, press the reset button, and you may get back full operation.

(2) 120 Volt wall switch may have burned out. They're only rated for 100,000 operations before they burn out.
(3) If the impeller is difficult to turn, you may try to use an "flywheel wrench", which is just an offset Allen wrench that fits into the bottom of the motor, and can be used to turn the flywheel manually, freeing the impeller and allowing the reset to work.
(4) The circuit breaker in the breaker panel in the basement may have tripped, cutting power to the switch controlling the garbage disposal. If tripped, turn off the switch to the disposal and reset the breaker.
(5) Disposal motor may have died.

This How-To seems like a nice one:

My garbage disposal isn't working. it doesn't even make a sound when i hit the switch. i checked the circuit breaker and it's not that...i pushed the reset button underneath and it didn't help, either.

On the bottom of the disposal there is a small red reset switch. Push it in and see if it stays. Turn on switch and see what happens. If it hums or buzzes take a 1/4 inch allen wrench and insert it into opening in the center of the bottom. Turn wrench back and forth while running hot water through disposal to help clear any blockage. Turn on switch on and see if thats helped. Thank you.

I installed a new garbage disposal. The way I connected electric to it was to just run a pigtail to a near by outlet. I put a switch between the outlet and the disposal. Whenever I try to turn it on it...

It sounds like you put in ordinary wall switch.
You use the word 'pigtail' which implies electrical knowledge, so without a photo it's hard to tell where the switch is shorting the circuit.
You need a single-pole switch with 2 screws and a ground screw.
If you use a 3-way switch, your wires are connected to dark screw and one of the brass screw
You have 2 wires running between receptacle and disposal.
The wall switch interrupts one wire. Not both wires.
So one wire from receptacle runs continuously to disposal.
The other wire is cut and one end attaches to a switch screw, the other end of the cut wire attaches on the other switch screw.
The bare ground wire connects to green screw.
Preferably the Hot wire is cut.

When you are wireing switch are you hooking black wire on incoming side of switch then out going black wire on leaving side, with white wire wire nutted together in switch box. If not try it that way and it should work. Hope this helps you. Thanks

My bager 5 seems locked up when you hit the switch it hums how do I get it unlocked.

One day years ago, our new garbage disposal got stuck, and started humming instead of grinding. My mom turned off the switch, then she grabbed a wood-handled broom and stuck it down in the disposal. I was wondering, what's that lady doing.

She took the wood handled broom and placed it on the disposal cutter wheel that was stuck. Then she wedged the broom against the sink opening, She pushed the cutter wheel forward until it was free. Then she showed me that the cutter wheel is supposed to spin freely even when the switch is off.

That's how I learned to un-stick a garbage disposal.

Im replacing a switch to my garbage disposal when i turn the power on both circuits are hot my question is that the switch runs hot in off position and when i turned the power on and flipped the switch it...

What type of switch are you using? A single pole switch does not have a ground. There will be 2 screws, and it doesnt matter which one you connect the Line (feed) and the load (garbage disposal) too. With the switch disconnected only one wire will be hot.

Hope this helps,

Cheers
