Question about Toshiba Computers & Internet
I have an older model Toshiba satellite (4200). but only works with the battery in and AC cord in. take either out, unit wont work. so, its running off the battery even with the AC cord in. take the battery out, leave plug in, unit wont turn on. is not the power cord. what could it be? I've heard of power cord is 'going', re & re power utility programs, even mobo fuse. but after reading here, I noticed you say there's no fuse on the mthr board.
On some older laptops the battery has to be installed for it to turn on.
if the battery don't hold a charge it's no good.. but you need it to get power from plug.

It sounds like the motherboard is bad. There is no power being sent to the fan and that means that somewhere in the the mother board is not sending the info.

It's a motherboard hardware issue in all likelihood.
There is NOTHING you can do but update the firmware bios. The problem is that most bios firmware update programs require both ac and battery power at the same time :(
You can try to do it anyways by visiting Toshiba's support page for your model and downloading the firmware from there.
It probably won't fix the problem but it's still worth a shot....sometimes it works ;)

Sounds to me like the transformer circuit that enables the batery to charge. If you have bought your machine within the last 12 months it should still be covered by warranty so go back to the supplier. If not covered I wouod still try as it is not beyond reasonable expecations that the machine will operate perfectly in very way for more than 1 year.

Try removing / swapping / reseating the memory.
Try booting with one stick only, if the top slot doesn't work, try booting the bottom slot. Try both sticks.
Let me know what happens.
