The motherboard can only take 2 GB of memory. If you tried a larger memory stick in any slot, the motherboard will fail to recognize it. A larger hard drive or an external drive will only increase storage and page file capacity. This will not improve the performance of the computer. Memory caching to the hard drive is limited to the bus speed of the hard drive interface (much slower than the RAM).

The better option if you can offered it is a new computer, if you do any gaming. You are dealing with a 2.8 GHz CPU with a 400 MHz bus. The computer is probably fine for e-mail but video and gaming response will not improve.

I wish that I had better news for you.

What type of RAM is compatible for my desktop pc for increasing speed ?

Your motherboard can support up to 8 Gb of ram, of type DDR2 667 MHz or 800 MHz. In practice 667 would do I believe as the performance difference is not great in practice. The board has 2 DIMM sockets for this.

It depends somewhat on your OS and what you want to do. I'd try 4 Gb first. Bear in mind that added ram doesn't actually speed the computer as such, only a faster CPU does that, but it will allow more windows to be kept open, and cut down on data swapping to virual memory on the hard drive.

This weird noise is a symptom of physical hard drive failure. So, if you really want to save your data immediately consult a data recovery specialist.

to add memory, for increased virtual memory it is to delete msic data from the hard drive, if it is your hard drive low on space you should purchase another hard drive and make the new hard drive as the slave to store more, on it. if not have a bigger hard drive installed, obtain a USB external hard drive. to add increased more memory you have to open the pc, add another sdram/dimm/ddr memory card.

I need to add space to my compaq presario desk top. i don't know how to on this computer. the model# SR5034X

If you want to increase cpu speed so you need to increase RAM memory.
You can fix it on motherbord of desktop cpu.
But if you have low space on disk storage partition so you can add space to desktop with 2 method.
(1) you can add harddisk to desktop cpu with sata or IDE .SATA harddisk is best if your motherbord support SATA.
You can add harddisk as you like for example 80 GB or 160 Gb.
(2) If you want to add RAM memory for speed reson you can purchase new RAm and fix it in memory module slot on motherbord.
There is 2 type on
RAM in currently.
DDR1 and DDR2

you can add RAM memory like 512 MB or 1GB or more.

I have a 20X Memorex multi function disk drive and have from time to time tried to use it for backing up/storing important data. My question is if I "verify" the burn there will be errors. I have also...

As for your question of disk vs hard drives, DVD's and CD's that are burnt from a computer are more easily damaged then hard drive data. The best idea if you are looking for a good backup solution is an external hard drive in my opinion. There are many opinions on this very subject so you will receive many opinions. There are no wrong answers just opinions and personal preference. Another solution you can try is an external HD using a program such as Symantec Ghost and create a full image of your hard drive.

Need to increase hard drive and memory

Easier said than done...

If you have the specifications of your current memory, you should be able to find higher capacity compatible RAM at any computer or office supply store. If you can find the right kind, then you simply need to buy it and put it in. Older and more rare types you may need to order via internet.

Upgrading the hard drive can be a tough process. Some drives used to come with upgrading software right on the drive (like Maxtor for example) but they don't seem to do that any more. So, besides buying the right type (either PATA or SATA connector) drive, and the size you want, you have to check your system specs to see how large a drive you can put in, older systems are limited. In addition, you would need to buy hard drive duplicating software, like Powerquest Drive Image.

To see the process of upgrading a drive, I found a page for you, as the details are quite extensive...

Add memory to HP/Compaq nc6000?

Yes you should increase the memory. XP runs suitably well at 512mb. At 1GIB it blazes.

The memory meter is pegged because it is having to use the Harddrive as ram (Swapfile) which is 1000x slower than RAM.

XP with nothing on it, straight from the factory will run with 256, but after 3-6 months of use, and adding applications it will get progressively slower.
