What is the ignition point gap?

In older engines with traditional points-condenser-coil ignition systems the dwell if the ignition was set by the gap between the points. The points act like a switch that opens and closes the circuit of the primary side of the ignition coil.

All later engines use electronic ignition that do not require points.

What is gap

Hi, Mike pertaining to engine spark plugs, "GAP" is the distance between the positive and negative electrodes at the base of the plug and is measured in thousands of an inch or mm by using a round pin gap gauge or flat blade feeler gauge. Every engine manufacturer has a specific design-size-heat range- gapped spark plug. Gaps will vary depending on engine brand. Gap is also referred to in engines using a mechanical "POINTS" ignition system instead of electronic ignition (what is the points gap) for more information about your question and valuable "FREE" downloads that you will need please visit the websites below. Why won't my mower start?

a weak spark indicates a coil problem
that problem can come from a faulty condenser in the ignition system or incorrect timing for the system
if it has an electronic ignition system test / replace it
if it has a points system replace the condenser and set the points to the correct gap

Spark plug gap for 1997 C1500?

Spark plug gap can affect the life of the condenser if you have a points and condenser ignition. If your car has Capacitive Discharge (CD) ignition, the gap will be OK anywhere between 25 to 30 thou (28 mil is usually optimum). 28 thou on spark plugs is fine for points ignition as well.
If you have a metric feeler gauge, type in "conversion" on your web browser, you will find a number of programs that will convert anything to anything to convert thou (thousandths of an inch) to mm.

The bike is starting only with small plug gap.If we set the gap to original it wont start? tell me the reason?

.....A weak battery comes to mind for starters. A carboned up spark plug is another; start with a new spark plug. If I recall correctly from 39 years ago, your bike has ignition points and condenser. Remove the points cover (on left end of the overhead cam), and check the points. Burned? Pitted? Get a new set of points and condenser but for now, just file the points a bit using an emery board or metal fingernail file. Set the points to .015 clearance at the high point on the cam lobe. If you have a timing light you could check the timing and adjust as needed by rotating the points base plate left or right. Bad points give resistance to the flow of electricity. When the points are closed, the condenser gets charged up. Less electricity going through the points means less of a charge going into the condenser. Now the points open up and the stored charge goes from condenser to coil. The coil then produces a spark. With a low charge in the condenser, the spark is weak and will not jump a wide gap. Set the plug gap to very little and the weak spark can jump the gap. The standard gap is .028. ....... I don't recall when Honda move the points to the flywheel but the images below may help if your bike is that style. Clean any rust on noted parts; magnets and pick up coils. Okay, now I have done my part. Now you gotta do yours; please rate my answer. Thanks! tombones49_177.giftombones49_178.gif

No spark on Mc Culloch 110 saw

Remove the stop switch wire from the switch and check for spark (use a clean spare plug and the plug base touching engine metal), If nothing, trace the wire back to the ignition coil looking for worn insulation. Is this a magneto model or an all-in-one module? If a magneto, there should be points and condenser--check points gap (about 0.015") and condition. Check the core gap to flywheel magnets (I use card stock to set the gap). Try to wiggle the flywheel to check for crankshaft bearing looseness. If the ignition is an all-in-one module, check the core gap to the flywheel magnets. Otherwise replace the module. Hope this gets you running.

It wont start it has a light spark is it the coil

With a new spark plug set at .020", there should be a fat, snapping, blue spark with a magneto. Electronic systems require several good pulls in succession to generate good spark. Other than setting pole gap, there is not is not much you can do for electronic types except replace the whole unit. Magnetos have points and condenser to play with. The points are usually the prime problem with dirty/oily contacts or improper point gap (.020") at the high point of the cam. Coils are a more rare problem.
