It's not your switch, it's your starter solenoid sticking open. Te same way the starter spins a gear up to the flywheel an retracts it when it's not receiving power, the solenoid has an electrically operated contact toggle switch inside that over years of use and very likely corrosion, has now stuck in the open or on position. Replace it, they're really cheap and extremely universal. It's a simple design so they're used in automotive applications very commonly.

SOURCE: John Deere Tractor...If you put a battery with more cranking amps than what's called for will it blow fuses? When we start the mower it continues to blow fuses. This was after the battery change.
a battery with a higher crank specification only means that you can spin the engine for longer before the battery goes flat
blowing fuses is from a dead short in the wiring, battery connect up wrong, problem relays
basically the positive of the battery is through the fuse) connected directly to ground at some point
