Question about Frigidaire 24 in. GLD2250RD Stainless Steel Built-in Dishwasher

1 Answer

Dishwasher will not drain

I have a Frigidaire Dishwasher (Model#GLD2250RDC3) that slowly stopped draining over several uses. Although it is an older dishwasher it was installed about 3 months ago and was never used before then.

At first, when I found more water than normal was left in the bottom of the DW, I started a new cycle (which causes the pump to run) then "Cancel" the cycle which caused it to run for another 90 sec. I could hear the whisper of the pump as well as hear the water drain into the garbage disposal. After doing this for a couple weeks I could still hear the pump but I couldn't hear the water any more.

Here is what I have done so far:
1. Verified no blockage inside the dishwasher - I removed the sprayer arm & screen and made sure there was nothing blocking the drain (we thoroughly rinse our dishes prior to putting them in the DW so there was little chance this was the problem).

2. Verified no blockage in the drain tube - first I detached the tube from the pump and successfully blew through the tube, but I also removed the tube and ran water through it from the faucet.

3. Verified the pump is running - after disassembling the pump housing, I re-connected the wiring and started a cycle on the DW. The pump impeller rotated normally. To make sure it would pump water, I poured a pitcher of water into the DW and the water came down into the pump and was forced out of the pump into another pitcher. When I inserted the inlet portion of the pump into a pan of water, it did not have enough power to create a vacuum and suck the water out of the pan, but that may be normal.

Everything I have read on websites assumes the pump is bad only if the impeller isn't turning, is it possible that it is bad even though it "kinda" still works?

Larry, thanks for the info. when I disassembled the pump to insure the propeller was turning I also made sure the check valve was working properly. I'm also certain of the drain hose loop. Posts for some other models mention a solenoid that has gone bad, I wasn't able to find a solenoid in my parts manual, and since no replies to this post mentioned a solenoid I assume that it doesn't apply to this model DW or pump.

UPDATE: 1/5/13 I haven't received replies yet so I keep researching. It seams that the more I research the more questions I have. A couple websites (on other models) suggested that no/slow draining could be the cause of a bad solenoid. However, in the parts diagram for my model I can't find a solenoid. I have also found references to different types of pumps: Reversible and Direct Drive. It is unclear which type I have, the manual doesn't specify and the websites I reviewed didn't describe how to find the type for your model of DW. Descriptions of the two types of pumps suggest that I could have either - here's why: 1. Direct Drive: The user manual for my model says "Precision Direct Wash System" - does this imply "Direct Drive"? 2. Reversible: It appears that my model has only a single pump (unless the second is extremely obscure). The lack of a second pump/motor suggests that one pump performs both the wash pumping (to circulate water through the spray arms into the cabinet) and the drain pumping (to eliminate the water from the cabinet). However, in the same descriptions are ambiguities: 1. The part diagram does not specify two pumps (Wash & Drain) - must not be a direct drive. 2. The part diagram does not specify a solenoid which is used to switch (reverse) the pump from wash to drain - it must not be a reversible pump. Another option I can think of is that the solenoid may be internal to the reversible pump. Therefore servicing the pump is analogous to servicing the solenoid. Though adding to the ambiguity, why do websites not include troubleshooting the electrical components of the internal solenoid the same way they do for the external solenoids? If anyone can clear up my misunderstandings it sure would be appreciated. Summary 1. Can a pump need replaced even if the impeller works? 2. Which type of pump does the Frigidaire GLD2250RDC3 have? 3. How does a person tell what type of pump their DW has? 4. In my specific situation, what techniques can be used to identify the issue rather than rely on speculation?

UPDATE: After getting no additional replies to my inquiry I went ahead and ordered a pump - Frigidaire #154580301 for about $35 on Amazon dot com. The part arrived in two days and installation was easy. It has been almost a year and the dishwasher is still working beautifully.

I had a similer issue with my kitchenaid dishwasher , turned out that the water inlet valve was starting to go, allowing to much water into tub at times , so drain cycle would not remove it all. . There is a diaphragm in the water inlet valve that is operated by a solinoid that you can check, but you would have to remove it an test it. Hope this helps

SOURCE: Dishwasher Not Draining

This sounds like a pump problem.
But before you take a look at the pump check indeed the drain out.
Simple way is take the hose off the dishwasher and blow while it is atached to drain and see if you can blow through it. If you can the problem is not there.
Check the filters in the bottom of the machine and than check the pump HERE you can find the parts and drawing of your machine

Hi Monique,

By any chance is your kitchen sink draining slowly? If the main drain is clogged it will back-up all the way to the dishwasher. Try using 2-Second Plumber or a similar product with a CO2 blast to clean the whole drain first.

Water did not drain from the bottom

Hello Cheryl, There are a couple of possibilities. When the dishwasher drains the dirty water it is a time based function. This leads me to believe it is a blockage or partial blockage in the drain hose.
Here is an example. (If your dishwasher drains into your garbage disposal) washing dishes you put scraps into the disposal and forget to turn it on after you are done. The disposal is filled with scraps this restricts the flow of dirty waterfrom the dishwasher. If the flow is restricted less water is being drained per second from the dishwasher. This is why the dishes still looked clean and there was still water in the bottom of the dishwasher.
(if your dishwasher drains into a drain pipe) there is blockage or partial blockagein the dishwasher drain hose. if the sink drains slowly the blockage is in the main line
Hope this helps

On the drain hose at the connection to the dishwasher there is a one way check valve. If debris has gotten trapped water will drain back into the dishwasher at the end of cycle
Hope this helps.

Water didnt drain from frigidaire dishwasher model FDB989GFC

Hello!

If your dishwasher does you need to check all this parts:

1. Check sink drain and drain hose for restrictions
The drain hose and recirculation hoses can be responsible for leaks. The drain hose can cause the dishwasher to fail to drain properly. The recirculation hose can be responsible for problems with poor rinsing of dishes.
2. Unjam the motor
3. Unjam the pump
4. Check the drain valve
5. Check the drive belt
6. Test the timer motor
If you have a brand new dishwasher or garbage disposer, check the knock out plug on the garbage disposer.

Frigidaire Dish washer MODEL

hi there aaliyazaidi2.is the water clear or dirty that you find in the dishwasher?there are two ways this could be happening.1,if the water is dirty[although it dose not have to be ,but its a sure clue]its you drain line of your dishwasher.what happens is because the drain line is lower than the sink drain, when you use your sink water runs by way of gravity in to the drain hose and then fills up your dishwasher, till you drain it or wash a load...to solve this problem you need too make a loop as we repairman call it.get some zip ties ,or what ever[string] and tie your drain hose off at the top off the sink under the sink cabinet[imagin your drain hose as a roller coaster, the hose coming from the dishwasher is the start of the coaster before it goes to the top of the big hill.what you want to do is ,at the top of the roller coaster hill, tie your drain hose to what ever you can under you sink causing a hill so when your hose goes back down ,it ends up into your disposer or what ever plumbing it ends up into.[hay i hope i helped you understand what i mean their];#2,the other way is your dishwasher water valve may not be sealing well. the water would only be clear if this was the issue and could be warm water because its only hot water to the dishwasher.what happens here is because the water valve is not sealing water slowly adds to your dishwasher may be drops at a time, and over the hours gone by it accumulates and the you notice water in the tub.to solve this you replace the water valve.its[most of the time blue, but could be tan or white]under the dishwasher.the water line from your house goes to it.i hope this helps you you can email if you need more help. God bless ,tom

My delonghi DW47S/W wont drain all of a sudden.

we have exactly the same dishwasher and all you do is pull the dishwasher out get a towel and tip it forward. the water drains out the door but it was recomended for an older dishwasher we had. ti works a treat. the original flooding happens when someone turns the machine off before it is fully drained. the machine has a safe guard that stops the machine from over filling the next time this is why is stops. hope this helps. its alot cheayer than a pluber who would do exactly the same thing.

Dishasher does not drain

If it gravity drains, but the pump does not push out the water.......replace the drain pump. I just repaired an 8-year-old  Frigidaire dishwasher with this very problem, and although it sounded like the pump was operating, it was not....it was just vibrating. I replaced the drain pump and it now works perfectly. I am a service tech with 38 years experience.
