Getting the prsh wheels to drive the mower is a simple task. They are belt driven so either the belt is clogged, or there is something on the pulleys that makes them slip. You may have to flip the machine up on the front end to see the pullies and clear them. If things are very wet, that could also cause those symptoms.

In the back of the mower...probably under the seat, there should be a lever to release the transmission, or it is on the back plate. As far as the noise when trying to move drive the mower, the brake in the back, next to the transmission is jammed, use a 1/2 inch wrench to loosen it maybe 1/4 turn and this should unlock the brakes

If the wheels aren't facing straight forward you may have broken an axle.

SOURCE: Need to remove rear wheels to replace tires on MTD riding mower.

most likely rust has taken over
find some liquid wrench or pb blaster and spray the axles liberally and let it penetrate the axles and wheel hubs where the axle goes through.
use a 2x4 and a hammer to tap against the wheel hub to try to move it down the axle then tap in back on to try to free it up as the penetrating oil works in, spin the wheel and tap in different areas of it
the worst case cenario would be to use a torch and heat the axle and hub up and drive it off, but it sounds as though you are moving it some and with some patience they eventually should come off
when you put them back be sure to coat the axle with some grease and do not forget to reinstall the key stock in each wheel, if they have it
the bolt in the center of the axle is all you need to remove and note where the washers came from and where they go back.

hope this helps you some

I have an 80's model 10HP rear engine Snapper riding mower that acts as if the rear wheels are locked together. The mower runs fine but does not want to turn. When you turn the front weels to turn,the...

Sounds like you have problems inside your gear box, The easiest way to check this is to stand the mower up on it's backend and try to turn one wheel and hold the other. You should be able to do this if you get any bucking or the rear end locking up your problem is going to be in the gearbox. FYI make sure you lock your clutch pedal down so the drive disk does not contact the friction disc

Need to know how to adjust the rubber drive wheel on a rear engine snapper. Any help will be great. Thank you

Usually just replacing the drive wheel will fix the problem. There are two allen head set screws on the disc mounted on the engine shaft visable through the hole in the rear of the mower. However, don't expect when you loosen them that the disc will move up or down freely. I've only ever move one by taking the engine off. I'd try replacing the rubber drive wheel first.
