Question about HP Computers & Internet
I have a HP G50 laptop computer which is running Vista and can't connect to the internet wirelessly. However, I CAN connect when hard wired. We have 2 other computers, phones, ipods, and an ipad that ALL can connect to the internet wirelessly. This is the only computer with this issue. I tried to updated the Atheros AR5007 wireless adapter when hard wired and it said it was already up to date. The date of this driver is 5/30/2007 and is version 22.214.171.124. The device status shows that the device is working properly. I have ran a few programs that detect whether drivers need to be updated and a few did show there was an update for this adapter and then asks for $. However, I go to HP's website and they list the update I have as the updated adapter. So I am hesitant on spending the $ if it is already up to date. The computer is 7 years old and I don't want to drop too much money into it if it is wiser to buy a new computer. My computer DOES recognize the wireless connection but shows an unidentified network so it won't connect to the internet. I have contacted my internet provider and they ran the winsock repair and did a ping and neither solved this issue. He believes it is the wireless card but could not help me any further. Stupid question.....I am not a computer expert....is a wireless card and a wireless network card the same thing? Is this both hardware AND software? I am at a loss of how to proceed here. I would appreciate any input that that can help. Thanks for your time in advance!
'is a wireless card and a wireless network card the same thing?'
answer:- yes they mean the same device, just a different way of referring to it.
'Is this both hardware AND software?'
answer:- no, it's just the hardware.
Also, have you typed in the security code from the router (the WEP key) if not sure, google 'wep key'
Don't spend $, hp are excellent with their update site.
Are your other computers using Vista and working wirelessly ok?
Do you get any signal quality indicator bars up on the Atheros window?
Have you tried 'rescanning for networks' ?
How close to the router are you? If not very, try positioning laptop adjacent to it and do a rescan.

Save hours of searching online or wasting money on unnecessary repairs by talking to a 6YA Expert who can help you resolve this issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.

My suggestion would be to uninstall SP1 if the wireless driver update does not work and wait until a later time to reinstall SP1 since it is apparent the problem occurred with the SP1 update. I'm surprised the HP Recovery didn't resolve it - unless it wasn't taken back to to Factory Default - which would be extreme as you would loose all data, software and updates.
