Question about Dell Inspiron 6400 Notebook

Lights are flashing but screen stays black, then laptop switches off

It was running fine, until I clicked on an article to read from a web page I've used before, when the screen flashed blue for a split second then switched off. I've tried everything that I know to get it to reboot, (which isn't much). I can't afford to take it anywhere to be sorted so need to fix it myself!! Kitty

thank you for replying, but I've no idea which light is for the hard drive. :( is there a way of re-booting in safe mode even though the laptop doesn't respond??

  • kes_smith Jan 14, 2013

June, sorry for the late respond. I have attached a flow chart. go through and see it the information helps.

  • June Symmons Jan 24, 2013

Thank you kes, after looking at the chart I realise it's out of my hands and have booked a house-call (when the snow clears) from an expert who hopefully, can at least transfer all my work from the laptop onto my pc. I'll post the outcome of his visit in the hope it will help someone else with their problem.

Does the Hard drive led come on?

No. I did manage to get the Dell logo on the monitor once, can't remember how thought...I'd read somewhere on this site to try pressing f12 (I think). It stayed on but down't seem to want to do anything else, then the bottom of the screen started flashing So thought it best to switch off!! Not had any luck since. On the little panel the first light with the number 9 is continuously on, the next two lights, one with A the next has an arrow pointing down both flash in unison. After about a minute they go out.

Ok June, I hope the snow clears fast to you can have your file and start working . You have a great day June.

You should talk to a Dell support specialist. The blinks are actually a code that tells you exactly what is wrong with it.

SOURCE: Dell latitude d630 won't boot up.

Can you boot in a Safe Mode with no problem? If you can try to use System Restore to return Laptop to previous state. Go Start----->All Programs------>Accessories----->System Tools-----> System Restore It's easy to use and it may return your system to time when it worked properly. Good Luck!

Toshiba Qosmio F25-AV205 screen keeps going black

If your laptop appears to boot up and the hard disk LEDflashes, then the problem is probably a back light fault. This can be a faultyinverter or a faulty CCFL lamp. Please click on this link and follow myinstructions to identify the fault and possible fix :- http://www.fixya.com/support/r3598095-faulty_laptop_lcd_screen

Aspire One PC Notebook: My acer one aspire turns on but screen stays black...

Try this for the black screen of death problem...

Here’s what you need:
  1. USB Memory stick (as low as 128mb)
  2. Another PC with a net connection
  3. WinZip, WinRAR, or some other program that can extract zip files.
  4. A quick visit towww.acer.com
  5. Your Acer Aspire One, that will power up/turn on, but the screen does not come on.
And here’s what you do:
  1. Go to www.acer.com and go through the DRIVER support pages until you get the Aspire One driver page for your relevant Aspire One model (110/150/751)
  2. Click on the tab on the download area that reads ‘BIOS’ even if it looks like you can’t click on it (their site design grays it out but it’s there) and download the BIOS file numbered 3310 (it might have changed version recently but do it) and don’t worry, you can trust this file, as it’s from Acer directly.
  3. Extract the zip once downloaded and find in the DOS folder the files ‘flashit.exe’ and 3310.fd
  4. When you’s ve found them, rename 3310.fd to ZG5IA32.fd and put this renamed file and ‘flashit.exe’ onto the USB memory stick
  5. Put the USB in the Aspire One and hold the keys ‘FN’ (function) and ‘Esc’ (escape) and keep them held when you turn the laptop on
  6. Watch the power button and when it starts flashing, press it once (DO NOT DO ANYTHING ELSE)
  7. You should notice the USB (if it has a light) blinking as well… The netbook has started ‘flashing’ the BIOS and after about 7 minutes, the netbook should shutdown and reboot itself and VOILA! The screen should turn on just fine.
It took my three times but this IS the proper solution! I am now very happy with my Aspire One that still works!

M1991 screen stays black, little light is yellow

The fault is a back-light problem and the fault could be a faulty inverter board or a faulty CCFL lamp.

My XPS 1530 will not shutdown, it only restarts

Try running chkdsk /r and then restart the computer. to do that, click on START, RUN, in the open field, type 'cmd' and press <enter>. A dos window will open. At the blinking cursor, type 'chkdsk /r' and press <enter>. You will get a message that the drive can't be locked and do you want to run it the next time Windows starts. Type 'y' and press <enter>. Now shutdown the computerand restart it. Chkdsk will run and it may take some time. Depending on your installation, you will see a blue screen that will show the progress. Sometimes the screen will stay black and the hard drive light will flash. That's ok. Let it run until Windows loads. Wait until it is completely loaded and then try shutting it down normally.

Good luck and let me know how it works out.
