2) Your Bradford White most likely uses screw-in type element
Older models use flat flange type element.

3) Buy elements at local hardware.
Match wattage of new element to wattage that shows on label on side of tank

We have changed the element and is still not working.

What water heater do you have? Question posted under BW 120V 6 gallon electric.
Element is found on electric water heater.
Igniter is found on gas water heater.
So now it get's confusing what water heater you have.... for example some 6 gallon RV water heaters have both electric and gas. And troubleshoot for that is different than electric water heater.
Copy following link for electric water heater troubleshoot resources:

Does tank have 2 elements or 1? Which element did you change... why did you change element before replacing thermostat? What symptoms were you experiencing before changing element?
Is this a new heater? Was tank full of water before power turned ON?
Add a comment and describe problem in detail.

Too much hot water, how to adjust water temperature

1) Copy following links:

http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-test-water-heater-element.html
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-replace-thermostat-on-electric-water-heater.html

2) if you have electric water heater, and too much hot water, then thermostat may be bad, or element is shorted and needs replacement. Test elements first, and if they're ok then replace both thermostats.

Burnt out element

Are you sure its burnt out? Most of the time its the thermostat. If its burnt out then just change the element. To do that all ya do is shut off the power to the heater drain the tank unhook the two wires on the element and unscrew the element and replace it with a new one. You can get new ones at lowes or home depot. Its usually the bottom that goes out first.

I need the basics for replacing a thermostat on a water heater...Bradford/White brand, model M250S6DS2 50 Gal, 4500 watt per element 240 voltage 50/60 hz. It keeps over heating even at lowest setting

Copy following link for replacing thermostat.

Suggest you might also want to test the elements while power is turned off, just in case the problem is element shorted to ground across metal tank to ground wire.

At least you know the 240volt power to water heater and the circuit breaker are good.
