My LCD screen initialy lost colour and showed images in black and white. With a little wiggling sometimes I got the colour back. Now the screen is just blank, although the Eye piece works fine and themachine records and plays perfectly well. I presume this is a loose connection, any ideas please.

Re: LCD Screen Blank
this usually happens with the ribon cable which is giving power and signal to LCD is becoming loose or damaged due to folding..since the LCD wiring replacemet is a skill needed task i recommend you to give it to the nearest service centre so that your cam will be ready for future shots

Hi, A component called CCD IMAGER is faulty and needs replacement, Basically the component works as an eye to view the image when it start malfunctioning screen and viewfinder does not show image. The detail of said part is given below: Part No. Description 8-753-244-71 ICX611NKF-13 (CCD IMAGER)(HC51E/HC52E/HC53E/HC54E)
For convenience area is marked with red circle in the picture below:
iam very sorry that you have this problem. When an LCD screen of DSRPD170P stops working it means that you have to get a replacement LCD screen. The replacement requires a qualified technical person. if you have such a person , then here are the details for ordering the LCD screen parts:
A-7078-956-A PD-217 board complete.
1-517-931-21 Tube fluorescent cold cathode.
Please note that the viewfinder of the DSR PD170 camera is always manufactured and supplied as black and white (not colour) so this is not a fault!
I have the same problem with a DCR-HC45.The culprit is the ribbon between the circuit board and the LCD display, but my problem is worse, sometimes the screen turns white and I can't see anything on it.I have no idea from where to buy a replacement ribbon but I know how to replace it.
The LCD screen on my Sony gradually lost the image. It is caused by the flexi/ribbon cable that runs from the camera body to the inside of the LCD screen breaking down. The copper tracks have broken. They may sometimes touch to give you a connection , but it will get worse. A replacement flexi is the only answer.
For my DCR-IP1E it cost me £31 (thats uk money....not dollars)
Sony Part Number A-7111-611-A (FP733 Mount) Taking the old one out was slightly tricky, putting the new one in is very tricky! I work in electronics, so I could achieve it but if you are not happy with electronic stuff, find someone who is.Straight forward for a repair shop expert. Tools needed? Just a small cross head screwdriver. Keep all bits with a note as you go along. Good luck.
You may have a problem with the image sensor device (CCD). From October 3, 2005 through October 2, 2007, Sony will repair, free of charge, affected products exhibiting the above-mentioned problem where it is caused by the image sensor device. Sony will also cover the cost of shipping and handling from and to addresses within the United States and US Territories for service to correct this issue.
To see if you have this problem:
Power On your camcorder (make sure the battery is fully charged).
Check the LCD screen and verify that the display icons are turned on. If you cannot see the icons, press the Display button until the icons are visible.
Put a tape in the camcorder.
With the lens cap off, record some video. NOTE: Be sure to speak during the recording so the video will contain your voice.
Rewind this section of the tape (using tape counter to verify start of your recording).
Play back the recorded video and use the LCD screen on the camcorder to view it. You should hear the audio you recorded and the Display icons/text will still appear.
If your camcorder is affected by this CCD issue, the picture will either be extremely distorted, or there will be no visible picture (just a blank LCD screen with the display icons still visible).
