They used to be next to the desk in the study or library of a house in the preindustrial era and also in the early industrial era. During the industrial revolution, draftsmanship became a job so only those working in the field had these tables and they were no longer found in people's private homes. They were no longer built from wood and brass but rather from steel and plastic.

Do I need a board cover for my drafting table?

Yes, you should get one. This cover is typically made from vinyl and is a good surface for drafting. It protects the table surface from tool damage and from pen marks. Don't forgot to clean the cover so old pen marks will not smudge new drawings.

How do I make the drawing paper stay in place on the drafting table?

The way I do this is with magnets because my table surface is magnetic. If yours isn't then you can buy drafting tape.

Can I use a regular table instead of a drafting table for painting?

the only problem with a regular table is that it's horizontal. Looking at your work like this can distort the images. A regular table is fine if you purchase a small drawing board to raise the images. The other problem with a regular table is that it can really hurt your back from all the bending over.

As a student, should I buy a drafting table?

I would say hold off. Drafting tables are not so common anymore. People who used to use them now use computer programs. Also, they are expensive for a student. However, you definitely need a table to work at. Most people find it easier to work with a slightly slanted surface so you may want a small drawing board as well.

How can I tell if an old table I inherited is a writing table or a drafting table?

These two tables usually look very similar. If the drafting table was at a flat setting with the height set at regular desk height (maybe 74 cm) then it looks just like a writing table. The way to tell if it's a drafting table is if there is an edge on one of the sides. The edge was used to stop things from sliding off the table when the table was at an angle and it would sometimes hold writing tools.

What is a drafting table (drawing table) made out of?

You can find old ones made from fancy wood and brass. I have an antique one like that in my house. My husband is an architect and he uses a table made of steel and plastic. Some of his colleagues have tables from metal with the surface made from safety glass.

What does a drafter do?

This is someone who designs and draws plans of structures. They take all the ideas and drawings from the architect and his team of engineers and makes a technical drawing of the structure. He creates this drawing on his drafting table. Nowadays he may also or instead use computer programs to create his/her drawing.
