It is great cardio workout and it also improves quickness, endurance, co-ordination and footwork. It is inexpensive to buy and can be used anywhere. It can improve an athlete's vertical leap because jumping rope targets the calves.

I keep seeing movies where the boxers all train by jumping rope. Why do they do this?

They jump rope to develop cardio endurance as jumping rope definitely keeps your heart rate up. Boxers need strong forearms and this activity targets them. Boxers need strong calves for their quick footwork and jumping rope targets the calves. Boxers also need good rhythm and timing, a skill that is developed in jumping rope.

I am a boxer. What is the best way to train using jump rope?

You can train with 3 minute rounds where you do intense skipping and then less intense jogging in place, alternating between the 2 types. This is great because it is like boxing that alternates between fighting and circling the ring. Another option is intense skipping for 1 minute followed by 1 minute rest, with about 6 reps of this.

If I have weak knees, is jumping rope a good exercise for me?

Yes it is! Jump rope is considered a low level plyometric exercise, a low impact exercise. High level plyometric exercises are bad for weak knees. You should always be careful though. Try to land on the balls of your feet and not the heels and make sure to keep your knees lax. It is always a good idea to consult with your athlete/physiotherapist/trainer.
