I moved every moveable object on the handycam to no avail and then I wiped the screen to clean it and got the menu. It is a touch screen cam. Thanks antway.Ian

Try to use a cotton swap to 1st clean the recording lens or blow gently on it. Place an empty disc in, format the disc, record a little scene. Turn off camcorder. Place the error disc in the camcorder, turn on the camcorder all the way to play/edit. If this doesn't work turn it to record and try to record. Worked for some of my error disc

Option 1:
If you want to use the USB cable to connect the Camcorder to the Computer to transfer the video to the Computer then:
(Applicable for Vista Operating System Only.)
This Camcorder does not support USB streaming with the VISTA Operating System. Use an i.LINK cable to transfer the video to the Computer. The i.LINK port is also called IEEE 1394 or Firewire port.
(An i.LINK is a black D shaped connector with 4 or 6 pins. The type of
cable to be used will depend on the i.LINK port of your Computer. The
Sony Camcorder will have the 4 pin i.LINK cable and if the computer has
the 6 pin i.LINK port, then you may have to use the 4 pin to 6 pin
i.LINK Cable).
You can use any video capturing software like Windows Movie Maker to transfer the video from the Camcorder to the Computer.
Refer this Link for the instruction to transfer the video to the Computer using i.LINK cable.

NOTE:
As the Camcorder does not support USB streaming with Vista, it is not
required to use any Sony Device Driver to transfer the video to the
Computer. You do not require any Drivers or Software from Sony to
transfer the video from the Camcorder to the Computer using the
i.LINK/Firewire interface.
Option 2:
(Applicable for Windows XP Operating System only):
If
you are using a Windows XP Operating System then you have to install
the USB Streaming Driver in the Computer from the supplied Software
disk with the Computer.
Check this Link for the instruction to transfer video to a Computer using USB Streaming.
http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/documentLink.do?externalId=C222820
If you do not have the supplied Software disk then I suggest that you use the i.LINK cable to transfer the video.
Or you can purchase the software disk from this link:

NOTE: Since the original supplied software is not available for free download now.
Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!
