Next time you play it, try holding the stick just slightly in the opposite direction to compensate as you start the system, or unplug the controller-hold the stick down, then plug back in ( while playing )

Look in Network settings on the XMB there is a diagnostic tool in there, what is the signal of the network that the Playstation is receiving? Most people don't realise that if the PS3 is in a tv cabinet or unit or something that's going to block the signal and if it drops below say 50% you are going to keep dropping your connection, especially during an on-line gaming session where you ping is a priority. So... even if you are sat on a laptop next to the TV cabinet, the signal's probably not the same in the unit.
You could try running a network (ethernet) cable from your router to it to see if there is a software issue rather than a problem with the network.
The last thing to try is to login to your wireless router settings and go to the advanced settings and see if it is trying to block your playstation, on some routers you need to allow certain IP addresses etc. You could manually assign an IP address to your PS3 and then write it into the router settings...
The I-link S400 port does not supply power to devices. If your tv requires a powered S400 port, then the port is not capable of working. Check the instructions for using firewire on your tv to see if it requires a powered S400 port. From my experience, the S400 Firewire port is not a video output. The network connection your calling firewire is a slve type situation because is does not have a power output. You can connect the PS2 into a IEEE 1394 network, and that is supposed to be plug and play.
I had the same problem with my Playstion2. I found that the playstion was givin an NTSC video output but the TV was only for PAL. try it on a TV that is PAL if your gamestation is PAL or on an NTSC tv if its NTSC. Does this help?
