The drive gear is stripped. Remove the cover and you can see it just in front of the motor. It is white nylon and the part number is 41A2817. Available from Sears or any good door opener service company. It will come with instructions.

The button is just to the left of where all those white wires go. You may have to remove a light lens to get to it.

SOURCE: I need a repair guide for a LiftMaster garage door opener.

I replaced the gear and shaft, easier than just the gear and only about $10 more. You get a new chain gear too and bearings. Here are the complete printed instructions scanned in, along with my experience doing it and big photos, on a webpage I made.

1/2 horse can here motor turning up or down but will not raise door

many garage door openers rely on springs to assist the opener motor to lift the door. If one or both springs fail, the additional lift that the spring provides is missing, and the motor will have to do all the lifting alone. The motor isn't designed to do all that work, so to prevent the motor from burning out, the gearing inside the opener will strip. The gears are made of nylon, and under normal operating conditions would last a life time. The full, dead weight of the door will quickly strip the gears.

You can purchase replacement parts at an Sears store (they will probably have to order them though) or you can do it yourself at online. Sears has an online site dedicated to garage door openers, here. Unplug and open the the opener housing to view the internal parts and identify those the need replacing. Many repair parts consist of a complete kit of usual parts that fail - it is a good dea to get it if it includes all the parts you need.

While waiting for the parts to arrive, you can still use your garage, but you'll have to lift it up and down by hand. Pull the rope / handle that connects to the arm between the door and the chain / opener track in the middle of the door to release it from the linkage.

I hope this helps & good luck! Please rate my reply - thank you.

I have a Craftsman garage door opener, model# 13953674srt1. It will not open or close the door. The motor sounds normal & runs the entire cycle but the chain is not moving. What is the problem?

Remove the cover from the motor unit and you will find the drive gear is stripped. The part number is 41A2817 and is available at any good door service company.

Powerdrive PD422D 1/2 HP Security Plus Screw Drive Garage Door Opener: my garage door unit acts like the gear is stripped...

DOES IT MOVE AT ALL OR JUST RUN??

IS THE ROPE RELEASE PULLED??

IF THE GEARS ARE STRIPPED IT WILL NORMALLY MAKE A GRAVELLY SOUND. AND THE DOOR WILL MOVE BUT NOT LIKE IT SHOUL.

TRY DISCONNECTING THE DOOR FROM THE OPENER & SEE IF THE TRAVELER MOVES NORMALLY.

Your drive gear must be stripped. Remove the cover and you will most likely find lots of what looks like white sawdust and a stripped gear. It is white nylon and is just in front of the motor. The part number is 41A2817 if you want to replace it and it comes with instructions. Available at any good door opener service company.
