Question about Acer Aspire 5100 Notebook

1 Answer

Locks up at the select user screen when booting up.

When I turn on my Acer 5100 it gets to the screen where you can select the user but the mouse (and touchpad) do not work. In fact, nothing works. It just locks up at this point. I have done a hard reboot by holding down the on/off switch and when it start up it goes through the disc checking and then goes to the same login screen and locks up.

It seems that the keyboard is not working either because when I hit F2 on bootup, it doesm't do anything. I did get the safe mode screen once but the arrow keys did not work either so I was not able to actually get to the safe mode. It started in normal mode and locked up at the same point.

Any ideas? Oh one other thign I noticed is that when I just turn it off, it actually goes into hybernation. I also tried to remove the battery for 20 minutes and that too did not work.

Thanks for your input.

I did not add anything new before this problem started. I put my old hard drive in to eliminate that as a possibility but it did not help.
I can't get to the bios. I did the fast hitting of the F2 key, F8 key, Del key, F1 key, and Esc key. Always the same sequence of events
    Goes to windows loading screen.
Goes to Checking file system on C screen. At this point, I hit several keys to abort the checking but no key works so it goes through the 100% checking and then
    User Select Window (locked up).

Last night I actually saw the windows boot menu. Don't know how I got there but the keyboard did not let me use the arrow keys to select safe mode so it went through the same process after the countdown and locked up at the select user window.

    A bit of history:
My screen backlight went out on the left side of the screen. It was intermitent. eventually it went all black but I could see the information was still on the screen so I assumed it was the backlight or inverter. I could play with the on/off switch (the one activated by closing the laptop) and it would come back.

I ordered a new inverter and got it about a week ago. I did not change it until yesterday when my screen went all black. Thsi time there was no information on the screen. After several attempts at rebooting, I changed the inverter and no luck. I removed the pattery and after 20 minutes, I put it back and the screen and backlight all worked again but theat is when the lock up started.

I think that is about all.

It stopped working yesterday morning January 18, AM. 2009.
    No upgrades have been done.
I have a recovery disc but it does not come up. None of the function keys work.

  • energyrings Jan 19, 2009

The recovery disk is ignored and yes, it was doing the same thing before I changed the inverter.

Acer Aspire 5102 WLMi. It is 2 years old. I cleaned all the dust from the fan and surounding areas. The touchpad is activated by holding down the Fn key and F7. This action also does nothing.

    Hrm. Interesting.

Have you changed any settings or installed any different drivers for your computer?

Almost the instant you turn on your computer, you get a chance to log into a configuration screen (something called the BIOS) -- normally escape, F1 or delete. If you can get in, don't change anything -- but it can help narrow down the problem, by saying whether the keyboard works before Windows.

What I want you to do is actually hit F8 at least once a second as soon as you turn on the computer. If the keyboard's working at all, you should get to a Windows boot menu; if you can, try selecting Safe Mode (with network support). Can you boot in then? Does everything seem to work (albeit your screen will appear smaller)?

Please write back and let me/others know just where things seem to run off the rails here.

I just can't begin to think of what might've gone wrong. The timing with the new inverter is certainly suspicious -- but it might not have been the switch to the new inverter so much as maybe a power surge or something when the old one died. I just don't know; this is way outside my experience.

The only thing I can think of that I would try: See if you can find the BIOS battery on the motherboard, pull that and the main battery and the AC/DC power supply, let it contemplate its sins for 10 minutes, hook it all back up. I don't see how that could hurt. I'm not sure how that would help, if it would.

How much did you have to take out to swap the inverter? When I went to replace my hinges (TravelMate 4652lmi), I did apparently bump the keyboard connector. It had an odd connector, more of a clamp than a connector; I crossed my fingers, opened it up, closed it down, and it did work on the reboot.

When did it stop working
look at your keyboard make sure it isnt locked or shutoff
usually needs fn key plus another key to turn it back on
or change anything. These keys would be located usually at the top of keyboard and there symbol will be the same colour as your fn key.
Did you upgrade your system
If you are still unable to get on I would do a recovery

Acer Aspire 5100 Notebook Boots to Windows, but nothing works. No keyboard, no mouse, no usb or CD, no external monitor. I have an Aspire 5100 Acer Laptop that has no keyboard or mouse function period...

Try booting your computer from CD ROM with the OS CD/DVD already inserted and when prompted just try repair. If that does not work re-install the same on the same 'partition' assuming it to be C by deleting the the windows system files only. While doing so keep the internet on and immediately after the basic version of the OS is installed and the m/c boots-up for the first time, go to the official website and download the latest drivers for every component like toch-pad, keypad, display, audio, etc.(i.e. almost all the drivers)

Can not get my key board to respond when coputer boots up,

Do you get video at least?
Do you get keyboard during POST? (Try turning the system off, turn it on and keep hitting F8 until you get to a windows boot selection screen)

Does Windows boot all the way up but you just cannot interact with the laptop? Try plugging in an external mouse/keyboard/speakers, or remove it from the docking station if it is attached to one.
If you get keyboard/mouse before windows (able to move up and down the boot selection screen), then Windows may just need to be reinstalled for some strange reason.

If you still aren't getting anything, the motherboard may need to be replaced.
