Windows can only play sound through one device at a time unless you have multiple audio devices, (i.e. USB headphones and onboard soundcard)

Even when you have multiple audio devices, very, very few programs have the ability or need to play the same audio through 2 different devices at the same time.

you can for example though, play winamp through your speakers while playing a vido game in your USB headset. Basically it is possibly to have different audio going the different devices at the same time but it is generally not possible to have the same audio going through different devices at the same time.

Use the SYSTEM RESTORE utility to go back to a certain date that you think is in its perfect condition, say 2 to 5 days ago will do. Everything will be restored except data or work files. Good luck

No sound

The problem is one of three things, defective earphone jack, audio output ic, or bad speakers. The laptop must be dis-assembled down to the motherboard level in order to address this, and I recommend a professional for this job.

When using Skype the other party can hardly hear me - have been through all the standard sound checks etc to no avail - can I buy a microphone to plug in that is better?

You can by a headset such as this Logitech at Wal Mart: http://www.logitech.com/en-us/webcam-communications/internet-headsets-phones/devices/349

I have two of these headsets. They're comfortable, easy to use, have great sound and voice transmission. They also have an inline on/off switch and volume control. On my laptop this item plugs into the speaker and the mic port on the front. They plugs are color coded for added convenience.

Usb headset

you should have a speaker icon in left of task bar, right click it> adjust audio properties> audio tab and check your mic headset is on the drop down list on the sound recording, if so click on it, then go to the sound playback and click the advanced tab and select headphones.

Next click the voice tab, check the voice playback is your headset and the voice recording is set at your headset and then click test hardware
