SOURCE: Replace drill chuck on 23 year old Craftsman 8" drill press

Yes it does have a Morse taper and you can remove it by gently hitting it with a rubber or nylon mallet.

How to fix a out of round drill press chuck (ToolKraft 350B

The chuck could be threaded like an average power drill.

Respectable drill presses use a hollow quill shaft that is likely to be machined into a taper that is likely to be number 1, 2 or 3 Morse taper.

Morse taper drill bits are used a lot - the shank is tapered and will grip and drive when inserted into the quill with just a small force. When the bit is to be removed the quill is turned by hand until a slot in the quill lines up with a slot in the housing and a wedge-shaped steel tool is slid in and tapped breaking the taper fit.

Most such drill presses are supplied with a chuck for light duty drilling already mounted. The chuck is often a Jacobs type mounting by means of a Jacobs taper onto a Morse taper adaptor.
The adaptor is tapered at both ends - at the lower end the taper is steep and the chuck must be pressed on with some force. The upper end will have the same gentle taper of the Morse taper drill bits and is removed in the same way.

Using the chuck drilling is limited to the capacity of the chuck, typically 1/2" or 5/8" unless blacksmith's drill bits are used that have stepped shanks.
Morse taper drill bits will allow heavy duty drilling far in excess of the chuck capacity.

Hopefully your problem is caused by the chuck rather than a bent quill.

How do I make the spindle chuck stay in the quill of my model FDM 16 SPC drill press? I have forced it down on a block of wood. It will stay for a while that fall out.

16 speed should have a Morse taper
for the std drill chuck

to fit a different chuck the morse taper needs to be emery sanded
and the replacement chuck should stick
after using the wood block pressure press method

if not you need a new morse taper for that spindle chuck

i had my drill accuracy and off center spin tolerance down to one thou

with stretched old belts I got more speeds than 16
for special jobs
my 16 speed used a morse taper two for the drill chuck

this picture says its a spindle chuck

What size taper is on a delta DP220 drill press so I CAN BUY A 1/2" DRILL CHUCK TO PUT ON IT

If its possible, pop along to a local machine shop and ask nicely if they could help with identifying the Morse Taper, if its a Morse. Go online for what tapers would have been used around that period. Drill chucks are usually 1/2 UNF mount even if its a late metric unit. You would need a Morse to 1/2 UNF or taper to taper if you buy a taper fit chuck.

Is the chuck a know off or threaded chuck. where should i buy a replacement and what should I ask for.

It almost certainly has a #2MT (#2 Morse Taper) drill adapter. Lower the quill and look for a slot on each side of the quill - that's a knockout slot. Insert a steel wedge into the slot and tap the wedge to force the Morse taper apart.

You can buy replacement Morse taper chucks from any number of woodworking or woodturning supply places, or from metalworking supply places, or eBay. You can get them from Grizzly, Packard, Rockler, Enco, Victor, MSC, Grainger... you can buy them through Amazon, you can get them at Sears.

You can buy the assembly as one unit or as two pieces - the chuck and the adapter. If you buy it as two pieces, be sure that the adapter and the chuck have matching tapers - that's usually a Jacobs taper like a #3JT or a #34JT, for example. It's much easier if you buy one matched unit.

You can get keyed chucks, keyless chucks, and automatic chucks with a #2MT shank.

Chuck falls out of drill press

There is a long tapered hole in the spindle of the press known as a Morse taper. It holds a 6 or 8 inch morse taper arbor which is attached to the drill chuck. This is made to be removed frequently by putting a wedge shaped key into a horizontal hole in the drill press and giving it a little tap. This is for making tool change that involve removing the chuck. If you had two such tools (say two different style chucks) they would each have their own dedicated morse taper arbor. But there is also a short tapered cyclinder on the chuck end of the morse taper arbor, with a matching hole in the back of th chuck. This is not intended to come apart frequently, but it can be disassembled. I'm not sure which one is coming apart, but regardless of which one it is, you might try this fix. Clean up any bumps at all on the oustide of the taper and inside the hole with sandpaper 200 - 300 grit. Use a dowel to hold the sandpaper in the hole, and use the motor to spin it. --- JUST BE CAREFUL that if it grabs that it doesn't grab you! Once it's all cleaned up, you can you the press aspect of the drill press to seat it in place. You also might have to replace the arbor. They don't cost all that much and are available from You specify the particular taper for BOTH ends of the arbor. The long end is a Morse 2,3 or 4, and the short end is specific to the drill chuck manufacturer, like JT-2 (Jacobs chuck taper 2). Write back if you need more help.

Drill is running but chuck is not turning, appears dis-connected ! Can still put drill bits in but no power to chuck when trigger pressed, although sounds and feels as if working.

This drill must have a morse taper shank on the drill itself and has to be tapped on w/ a soft face hammer to seat it on the morse tapered shaft on the drill. clean the taper really well on the drill end and the taper inside the drill chuck and tap together.
