Mapsource not recognizing Garmin type files

Hi
I have a fully updated version of Mapsource (V 6.15.3) installed on my computer which is running MS Vista Ultimate 64bit as the OS. When I try to load 'gmapsupp.img' I get a message which says '.... is not a valid Mapsource file and could not be opened'. Has anyone any ideas on how to resolve this problem?
Regards
Brian

After saving a Mapsource file in gdb format the file will not reopen. Converting to gpx and back to gdb using Babel solves the problem temporarely.

Operating systemWindows Ultimate 64 bit. Mapsource 6.15.4

.img files do not open directly in Mapsource. You will need one of the many freewares available on the net. I use MapSetToolKit. The file is available at http://cypherman1.googlepages.com/. You can find out how to use this software from http://cypherman1.googlepages.com/intruction_en.

It is the operating system which is causing this problem. Right click any .gdb file and click properties. Under the General tab click CHANGE to display a list of programs you can choose from to open .gdb files.

I have lost my Mapsource Setup cd for my Garmin GPS

  1. Download MapSource software updater from Garmin. The version as of December 4, 2007 is 6.13.6, and the trick also works on Map Source version 6.13.5.
  2. Unpack or extract the content of MapSource_6136.exe
    downloaded using WinRAR.
  3. From the extracted files, run MAIN.msi.
  4. Then, run Setup.exe. Note: The sequence to execute Main.msi and then Setup.exe is important to avoid “Previous MapSource not found!” error.
  5. Garmin MapSource now installed.

My Garman c340 will not let me enter a state and complete an address. I tried resetting the system and noting changed the system seems confused.

Sounds like you have an update problem. If a GPS cannot find an existing address. Your map is not up to date. Probably have the 2008 version.

TO GET 2009 MAP IS NOT EASY! Software update is, from the Garmin site you can update software easily BUT THE MAP... you must purchase for $69.99 OR if you're a technical person who knows the following instructions you can save some $$$

search torrent for
"CNNANT2009-1 MapID 396"
under torrent sites, you know what you're doing.

Use these instructions if you have downloaded it.

Download these first:
cgpsmapper.exe
gmaptool.exe
MapSetToolKit.exe
and MapSource where u can directly get from Garmin site
http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209

Create these folders on the root drive: (I will choose one to make things easier, you can change)
C:/grmtmp
C:/grmtmp/extract

Connect your GPS to USB, and BACKUP then remove
X:/Garmin/gmapprom.img and gmapprom.sum (may be gmapsupp.[img+sum]) approx. 1GB

1) Copy gmapsupp.img from this torrent to C:/grmtmp;
2) Extract gmaptool.exe, cgpsmapper.exe and mapsettoolkit.exe to C:/grmtmp/extract
3) Open a command prompt, and navigate to the extract folder ("cd/grmtmp/extract")
4) Run "gmaptool -S ../gmapsupp.img" Note that is -(CAPITAL S), lower case s is for different option
5) The above will extract files, you will get some warnings about 10 degrees. Ignore them.
6) Run "cgpsmapper mapset00.mp"
7) Run "MapSetToolKit"
8) In MapSetToolKit, press "Install A Existing Mapset"
8a) TDB File: "mapset00.tdb
8b) Overview map: "mapset00.img"
8c) Registry name: "WhateverYouWant" (I did "Grm2009.1Update")
8d) Leave TYP files blank, and hit "Install"
9) Close MapSetToolKit and run MapSource
10) Ignore any requests to unlock map, not ready yet.
11) Go to "Utilities-Get Unit ID" and Find Device with your GPS plugged in USB. Write down Unit ID.
12) Run Garmin Unlock Utility, Enter that Unit ID at the top.
13) Select under "Select Map Product"
14) Ender 396 for the FID/MapID, use the Generate button to get 25char code.
15) In MapSource go to "Utilities-Manage Map Products"
16) Go to "Unlock Regions" Tab, and hit "Add...", enter 25char code, comment optional
17) Now on the main MapSource screen, type 'm' to enable map tool.
18) You should see a large white rectangle, with rectangle outlines (these represent NA maps)
19) Click and drag to select them all, you can click "Map Set Name" if wanted.
20) Click the "Send to Device" button. Wait an hour. Enjoy.

Downloadig from memory map

Is Mapsource installed on your PC?
Are you using the "Receive from Device" icon?
Is your unit being recognized when you use "Receive from Device"?

If your answers are yes to all of the above, you might have to update your Mapsource programme (free of charge) from the Garmin Website. Also, updating your unit software from the Garmin site is also a good idea.
Please let us know if this fixes your problem.
