SOURCE: My towels always smell moldy

What in the world are we thinking when we allow ourselves to be forced to jump through these ridiculous hoops just do do laundry!?

I am furious and it is over something as stupid as a washing machine! Yes, you heard me, a WASHING MACHINE!!!!

New government regulations for new water efficiency washing machines has my family’s clothing smelling like a stinking, rancid, moldy basement! This is absolutely absurd! I have been told to change laundry detergent, run hot bleach water through my washer and, get this; my washing machine is 1 year old and my clothes smell filthy!!! The mold and mildew from these nasty machines have wreaked havoc through skin rashes and allergies in my children!

I paid $1,000.000 for this da*ned washing machine and THIS is what is being sold to the public under the disguise of efficiency!!?? I have been on the phone with GE about this problem. I have, over the past 3 months, with a technician on the phone, been instructed to do the following:

#Make sure I use high efficiency detergent and fabric softener. THAT will fix my problem.
Wrong.
*Cleaned the lint trap (..that is stupidly behind a metal access plate that you have to use a screwdriver to remove screws to get to it EVERY TIME) and THAT will fix my problem.
Wrong!
*Cleaned the water hoses; THAT will fix my problem.
Wrong!
*Cleaned the gasket around the door. THAT will fix my problem
Wrong!
*Cleaned the tub with bleach water. THAT will fix my problem.
WRONG!
*REMOVED the hoses and cleaned the pump. THAT will fix my problem.
WRONG AGAIN!
*Take the pump out entirely and clean all inlet, outlets and hoses. THAT will fix my problem.
WRONG! WRONG!! WRONG!!!

NONE of this fixed my problem of filthy, wet, stinking, rancid clothing that has endangered my family's health! I even washed my children's clothing out by hand in the bathtub and put them in the washer just to rinse and spin and they STILL smelled horrific.

Finally, at the end of my rope, I returned to the appliance store from which I purchased this machine and they have told me that they cannot accept a return. They will not accept a return and I have to deal directly with GE. I HAVE dealt with GE up until the final straw when I they told me I needed a new pump, but so sorry, your warranty JUST expired 3 days ago!!!

Furthermore, my pump was fine. I did NOT need a new pump and have now been told that I cannot return the new, unused pump that cost me another $183.00. I have now been told that this is a problem with ALL front loading washing machines and I should do the following:

*First, run a full complete wash cycle on hottest setting containing Bleach – * Note: wash cycle takes 1 hour and 20 minutes
*Next, run a full wash cycle on hottest setting using high efficiency laundry detergent for another 1 hour and 20 minutes
*Next, run a full wash cycle on hottest setting using Cascade automatic dish washing detergent for an ADDITIONAL 1 hour and 20 minutes
*Next, using Bleach water, wipe down entire interior of washing machine
*Next, using clean white cloth, wipe entire interior of washing machine dry
*Next, leave door ajar to air out machine

*Finally, I have now been informed that I cannot use fabric softener in the machine even though there is a fabric softener dispenser right in the machine because the new front loading machines cannot handle fabric softener!!

Furthermore, I was told that this is new technology and since it is so new, no one really knew these kinds of problems were going to manifest themselves and I just need to try to work with these problems because it is not the manufacturers fault but the GOVERNMENT’S fault! Sorry.

Are you kidding me??

Now I have a $1000.00 piece of junk that the appliance companies are pawning off on unsuspecting consumers and hiding their horrible designs by blaming the government.

So, now this is what I want!

I want the legislature to force manufacturers to properly inform the public of these problems and those who did NOT inform consumers of these issues, COMPENSATE their customers for the $$$$$ it has cost us and the misery and frustration caused by THEIR neglect by NOT informing the consumers of these issues. I want this to be retroactive BACK to at least the year 2005. Furthermore, I want compensated for the cost of buying a top loading washing machine in an effort to keep our families away from the mold and mildew and filthy mess this has caused! Finally, I want manufacturers to own up to the fact that they disregarded the health and safety of consumers in their efforts to profit as much as possible while touting efficiency.

Now I have heard that they have a new 'product' they can sell to us to inhibit the stench of mold and mildew. This is absolutely unacceptable!

This is outrageous and we need to speak out about this and make sure our voices are heard!

SOURCE: I have a Whirlpool Duet

Hi thecrowe4,
Huuum At your service!

Try this first regardless of no error message!

This can reset the system.
1.First unplug the washer and wait a 5 minutes then restart it.
It's like rebooting your computer when its acting strange!
Usually it corrects some error problems if they are not serious.
Or they are sometimes just a glitch.

2. if this works great, if not it could be the door with is bad!

Is the washer only just past warranty?
If your answer is , YES then I can tell you how to take care of it no cost to you and make the manufacture remedy it anyway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Let me know soon!
How old is the appliance?

Here is an report I just read recently!
Repair or replace?

When to pull the plug on your old refrigerator

It nearly always makes sense to undertake simple do-it-yourself repairs,
such as replacing a gasket on a refrigerator or a freezer.

Typically, you'll also find a troubleshooting section for more-serious problems
in the owner's manual.

Should you pay for a repair or buy a new model?
The answer depends mostly on the age of your refrigerator,
how much you bought it for,and the cost of the repair.

Follow these guidelines:

When a repair makes sense.

If your refrigerator is under warranty or less than four years old (three years for top-freezers),
paying for a repair makes sense.
Note that refrigerators under warranty might require service from a factory-authorized technician;
readers have found them on a par with independent repairers.

When a repair might be a wise choice.

If your refrigerator is out of warranty and is four to seven years old,
it might make sense to pay for a repair. Customers generally pay $100 to $200 for a repair.
But you might want to buy a new model even at this stage,
given that today's models are quieter and have added features.
Higher energy efficiency is another plus: Energy Star-qualified models made after April 28, 2008,
are 43 percent more efficient than conventional models built before 2001 and 56 percent
more efficient than those built before 1993.

When it pays to replace.

The repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new refrigerator.
Data also shows that it doesn't pay to fix a less-expensive top-freezer refrigerator
six or more years old or a bottom-freezer or side-by-side eight or more years old.

Thanks to better recycling programs, less than 10 percent
of a refrigerator you replace is likely to end up in a landfill.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to help!
Please do not for get to give a rating before you sign off!
Thank You, HUUUM

SOURCE: My towels always smell sour...it doesn't matter

The filter on your pump is probably clogged with lint and stuff. You have to remove the bottom front panel, 3 torx screws underneath. The panel will drop and come off. Drain off the excess water from the drain pipe you see. The white filter cover is right in front. Get yourself a good plastic bag to collect water. Unscrew the filter cover and twist the filter out. Clean out all the stuff and put it back in carefully. Check your pump too.

On some models the filter is located ‘inside’ the big hose from the bottom of the tub. This takes more time to clean.

Next run your washer with 2 cups of bleach, hot water. After it starts agitating stop the washer & let it remain for 2 hours. Then continue the wash.

The dispenser is flushed at the beginning of fill to remove detergent residue. This is especially important if powdered detergent is used.

Door won't unlock whirlpool wFs1073dd front loader

If it has water in the the machine, it has a safety feature that will not allow the door to unlock. There is a manual release but you have to take the bottom kick plate off. Unplug the washer. Then reach up on the right side of the washer and you will feel a plastic lever about the size and shape of a nickel pull down on this lever to release the door. If it full of water i would clean the pump first to get rid of the water. you can clean the pump by taking off the kick plate and you will see a pump with a lid with a handle on it. you can unscrew this and it will have a trap attached to the back of the lid. pull the trap out and clean any debris out then screw it back in. make sure to have buckets and towels handy once you unscrew the lid any water in the machine will fly out at you. the easiest way to avoid this is to clamp the hoses that go to the pump.

Hi there... My Whirlpool Duet washer has recently sprung a leak! It leaks a small stream of water out of the bottom left side (as you would look at it from the front) and runs down the stand to the floor....

I had the exact same problem on my Whirlpool front loader (model# GHW9100LW1). It turned out to be a tear in the rubber drain hose (from tub to pump). There seemed to be some debris caught up in the drain hose, and what really did the damage was a piece of metal wire that broke off one of my wife's bra straps and made a nice tear in the hose. The washer leaked out of the left side as well and down the pedestal. The drain hose only ran about $13.00. To get to the hose you will have to remove the front tub seal (bellow) and the panel just above the pedestal. While you're in there it would be good to clean out the filter cap for the drain pump as well. Good luck!

Interesting article explaining the problem associated with Front Loader Washing Machines and new products to combat the mold/fungus build up inside them.. Check it out....------------------------------------------------------------
Consumers who own front-loading washing machines should use only about one-quarter of the recommended amount of high-efficiency, or HE, low-sudsing detergent. Standard, non-HE detergents in front-loaders are too sudsy.

Why don't top-loading machines have this problem? Less efficient top-loaders that use more water typically flush out excess suds, soil, detergent and fabric softener.

Class-action lawsuits against manufacturers such as LG, Whirlpool and
Maytag have been filed, alleging mold and mildew problems in front-loading washers.

Some suits have been settled while others are pending, affecting hundreds of thousands of consumers, said Rob Shelquist, a partner at the Lockridge Grindal Nauen firm in Minneapolis.

According to Whirlpool, the low water use and airtight seals on HE front-loaders create the potential for odor-causing mold and mildew. Whirlpool has its own anti-odor product, Affresh, which sells for $7 for three treatments. SmellyWasher is more expensive than Affresh initially ($16 for 24 treatments), but Flynn's product lasts a year.

SmellyWasher can be used as a preventive monthly or less often if smaller amounts of detergent are used. Affresh is also used monthly, but a $7 packet of three tablets lasts only three months. Flynn's product will remove musty odors from towels or clothing, which Affresh does not claim to do.

Getting rid of problem
To eliminate odors, Smellywasher users should put a capful of Flynn's product in the detergent dispenser, select the hottest water temperature and the extra-large load to fill the empty washer with the largest amount of water. Let the water agitation start and then stop the washer and allow the solution to soak for two to four hours. Repeat as necessary and allow to soak overnight if needed.

Flynn said that the product works best in hot water. Consumers might want to run the faucet closest to the washing machine until the water is hot before starting the process or turn up their water heater temperature until the load is finished. (Remember to turn the temp back down to avoid scalding.) Flynn offers a money-back guarantee. Stubborn cases of mold and mildew might require five to seven treatments.

Susie Thymian is such a believer that she now sells SmellyWasher in her own store, McGinnis Appliance in Morris, Minn. Thymian had blamed the musty smell from her towels on her teenagers, who often leave wet towels in a pile in their bedrooms. Her kids' solution to the stink was to use more towels. Thymian's answer was to use more bleach in the laundry, but nothing got rid of the mystery mold odor until she found Flynn's product.

Only a few of Flynn's customers are from
Minnesota so far. Most come from regions with higher humidity. Sharon Turner, who lives in steamy San Antonio, said SmellyWasher worked after several cycles. "I was ready to throw out my plush towels and my front washer. It saved my sanity."
