Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

Washer Problem I have a Whirlpool washer top loading. Clothes were getting stained with either white or orange colored stains. It did not affect a whole load only a few pieces and would happen either every week for a few weeks or months would go by with no problem. I called a repair person out who could not come up with answer. He said the color was being lifted from the clothes. I stopped using bleach and fabric solfter but still have the problem. He tool the entire washer apart and cleaned it but said it was not that dirty. He checked my water but I still had a problem. He brought a second repair person to look at the clothes and washer so I had ober 50 years of experience with no answer. They switched my washer to a second washer I had in storage and after about 9 months the problem started again. I have to think it is the water but no one else on my street is having problems. It tends to happen on delicate fabrics the most often but also on t-shirt material. I am loosing my mind throwing away clothes worn once. I have no idea where to go for help. Have you ever heard of this before? Thank you.

Run the tub on its hottest setting with no load. Add a cleaning agent like goo-gone. If you tend to wash mostly cold loads - fatty (skin) deposits will gather behind the holes in the tub and are released during the limited hot cycles. After the cycle is complete your clothes shouldnt have problems.

It is recommended to HOT wash at least twice/mo.

The problem may be the seal on the transmission failing. If this happens, grease from the transmission (necessary for it to function) will leak and float (recall from science class that oil is less dense that water) up into the washer. As the grease enters the tub, it stains your clothes.

Washer leaves stains on clothing

Many times when we cook in the kitchen, we get splattered with oils that aren't easily visible. Very often these oil spots pick up dirt from the wash water. These stains don't usually get noticed until after the clothes have been dried. The best thing to do is to rub detergent or stain remover right on these spots and let them sit about half an hour. Then rewash the clothes in as hot water as the material can take afterwards.

My Frigidaire Washer Leaves Stains all over our clothes

Since this happened from day 1, your water may be the problem. Do you have well water? If so, get a softener system. This will get rid of the iron, which is responsible for rust stains. I really doubt that a new machine would cause rust or grease.

Why didn't you do something five years ago when you first noticed this? It will be much more difficult to get a resolution from the manufacturer after5 years.

Turn water off. Remove hoses and clean the rust out of the strainers at hose end. If they are clogged they will sound funny when water goes through them.

Front loading washer leaves stains

This often is called "lint" but is really a "whiting" left by un-dissolved soap and can be seen at it's worst on dark colored clothes. This is made worse in a colder climate where the cold water entering the washer is much colder than normal. Things that can effect the quality of the finished washed products.
Too much soap: ( we have a test for this further down the page ) If you follow the manufactures instructions on the box, then chances are you ARE using too much soap. They like to sell you their product, I find cutting usage in 1/2 of what the box says will still wash good and also cut your chances of getting "whiting" on your clothes.

WHIRLPOOL ULTIMATE CARE II MAKES YELLOW BROWN STAINS ON LIGHT COLOR CLOTHES

Grease will not come from the interior of the washer, as the machine ages build up deposits under the basket and it is oily, greasy and full of mildew. If can get a spanner wrench from a appliance parts house and remove the basket you will see on machines older than three years a build up starting. I pulled 15 lbs from a 25 year old machine and I had to go get sick outside, it was bad.

Rusty stains on all white clothes washed

I don't think the washer is at fault; the clue is 'Used very little.' I think the rust is originating in the water pipes serving the washer. The only help there is to run one machine with no clothes in it (wasting water) or putting splitters on the faucets and flushing the lines into a sink or other drain. To remove rust stains from WHITE (!) clothing and many synthetics, buy a product named 'Whink.' It is available in many drug stores, super markets, etc. in the area where one finds other laundry items.  It is fairly safe to use (with precautions) but keep out of reach of kids.

Rust stains and bleach spots.

I'm sorry but the white spots will be due to bleach. It may be that there was undissolved bleach in the washer after the first load. Maybe some of it came out with the whites and lay in wait in the basket.

I doubt the makers would guarantee anything for 7 years, so no free basket or installation is likely. Seems there is a chip in the enamel and dampness / water from the previous wash days before sits there collecting iron as rust particles.

For the time being you could try rinsing the machine out before the first load. That might prevent the rust marks or reduce them.
