A couple things to check first, make sure there's no floppy disc/cd in the drives, and if you are comfortable with computers, you can enter the boot setup of your BIOS, and check to see that your hard drive is listed as the primary boot device.
Restart your computer during the boot process you will see on the screen a certain key to press usually the Delete or F2 Key to enter set up this will vary depending on your computers bios.
Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS using the arrow keys navigate to advanced bios features press ENTER to check if its set to boot from your hard drive. The BIOS is AMI. Under ADVANCED SETUP:
The options listed for 1st,2nd ,3rd Boot device include:
IDE-0 means Pri master ?
IDE-1 means Pri slave ?

IDE-2 means Sec master ?
IDE-3 means Sec slave ? If for any reason you have changed a setting in bios and you are unsure of it you can load failsafe defaults or load optimized defaults press escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart .
WARNING: Before you start troubleshooting remember that you are dealing with electricity that can KILL. http://www.kitchentablecomputers.com/static.php - rules
Or there is a connection problem such as a bad cable
Test all power and data leads that attach to your hard drive IDE,SATA
the leads from your MOTHERBOARD TO THE HARD DRIVE make sure they have a secure dust free connections and are not faulty or just replace them they could be faulty if its a flat 40pin ribbon ide this will be the first to fail. Make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty computers need power and data to travel through every working device and continue its cycle and have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error Hope this helps.

SOURCE: When I turn the computer on, I get the following

This happens when the BIOS can't find the hard disk. If you're lucky it's just the hard disk that has failed, if you're not it's the motherboard itself the one that failed.
To find out which replace the hard disk with a good one then try to boot in th BIOS - if you can it's the hard disk, if you can't it's the motherboard.

SOURCE: at the startup menu i am getting a message that says, Reboot and Select Proper Boot Device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device."

Firt thing you can check is wthr your harddrive is detected or not. to do that you have to enter to the BIOS,To Enter BIOS you have to press DELET or F1 or F2 key(Mostly DELET). Now inside the BIOS in main menu check if your hard drive is showing or not. If it is showing there then you try to find out boot sequence, option after getting the boot sequence optuon check if the first device is other then hard drive.
if your harddrive is detected and your first boot device is also set to HARD drive then it might that your Operating system is Crash, in that case you need to re install the OS.
Now if you can see your hardrive in your BIOS then you can open the case( remember to unplug all the cable, Power, VGA, KEYboar ...etc) and try to inter change the harddrive cable connting cable, i mean just try to chage the port of the cable to other one and try switch on your computer ... if still you find the same problem then try changing new cable. ....well if still you have the same problem then i am afraid that you might need to replace the hard drive with new one.

Sorry for the Bad Englsih. Hope the above steps will work for you and you understood what i tried to say.
Cheers:)

Give this a try you probably have a mbr virus..

Download The following iso listed below. It is the latest version of the Kaspersky rescue disk. You need to burn it to a CD with a program like Imgburn (Which is also FREE like the iso file). Then you need to boot from the CD and run the scanner. It should fix you right up.

My computer says reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key

Hello
This means that your hard drive is not detected by your computer.Unplug your computer then open the cover then check if the connector of the hard disk are properly connected and the power supply on the hard disk are also properly connected. And try to feel if your hard is vibrating when you powered it on. Because if the hard disk does not vibrating it means that your hard disk have no power or not properly connected to the connectors or damage. Sometimes i experienced this problem thats all i done then it works.

Fatal issue: Reboot and Select proper Boot device

<p><b>Issue:</b><br /> <p>Reboot and Select proper Boot device <br />or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device<br /> <p> <br /> <p> <br /> <img src="matrix12_2.jpg" /> <br /> <p><b>Cause:</b><br /> <p>The boot record could not find a bootable partition so control was passed back to the BIOS. This issue occurs prior to the start of any Windows code. <br /> <p>It can be caused by a power-failure while the disk is in the middle of writing, a virus damaged the entry, a failing disk drive or a serious software bug damaged the partition entry (although Windows typically protects against this). This issue cannot be easily caused by any action you performed, unless you turned off the power without going through Windows shutdown.<br /> <p><b>Workaround:</b><br /> <p>1. If you had changed, added or removed hard drives, or changed or removed drive cabling, likely something is wrong. Recheck that the drives are properly installed and the cabling has not changed. Switching cables to different motherboard connectors or changing the master/slave drive jumpers (on old ATA drives) can cause this problem. In some systems, the cables were not plugged into the drive or motherboard securely and may have worked loose. Reseat all drive connectors.<br /> <p>2. It's also possible a hard drive is failing. Use a system diagnostic to validate the drive or swap to another hard disk.<br /> <p>3. If the first bootable drive is missing (disconnected or dead) the BIOS may be attempting to boot from a second disk. Confirm the primary drive is working.<br /><br /> <p> <br /> <p>Hope this will help...Your response is very much appreciated...<br />

I have put new hard drive in - When booted up it says - Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key.

there can be two scenarios
1. the harddrive is not installed properly
2. the harddrive is not selected as the first boot device in the BIOS of the computer.

After you install new harddrive, you will have to reinstall the Operating System in the computer as well.

Replaced hard drive and am getting a "Reboot and

Hi seqhdha,

The reason why you're receiving that meesage is the system is not detecting any bootable device on the computer or it is boot from a media that is not bootable (CD/DVD/USB). To fix this problem if you already installed the Operating System you can change boot priority setting and select the Hard Drive as the First Boot Device however, if you havent install the Operating System you need to select the CDROM as the First Boot Device and insert the Windows Installer.

Here are the steps on how to access the BIOS Page.

1. Restart the computer and while it is booting tap DELETE button.

2. On the Bios page look for the BOOT tab then set the priority to either Hard Disk or CDROM depends if you already installed the OS or not.

3. Follow the instruction on how to install the Operating System

4. Rate me if this helps so i can help others.

Thanls for using Fixya.

I purchased a used vaio vgc-rb43. Upon turning on a message appears stating "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device" What can I do from here?

It probably is a "dead" disk-drive inside the computer.
So, the computer would try to boot from the 3.5-inch diskette drive, or the CD/DVD drive,
if there was "bootable" media inside the device.

So, you need to take the computer to a computer-store, to remove the "dead" disk-drive,
and for them to sell you a "new" and "compatible" disk-drive.

Then, you must re-install Windows (did the seller include a set of "System Restore") CD/DVD disks? Or, can you telephone Sony, and order a replacement set of those disks?

Compu is averatec d1002uhce-1 2 month new .... i

sounds like either you have a disk in the cd drive and it won't boot because of it or you have some other device that it is looking to boot from instead of the hard drive.... if not, then you have a bad hard drive. I would first unplug all accessories and eject any discs... Next go into the bios (if your comfortable with it) and make sure the hard drive is in the boot priority... if nothing, then take the cover off and disconnect and reconnect your hard drive. If that doesn't work then you probably have a faulty drive.
