Please find below the solution:

Non-printing models (also applies to HR-8TE printing calculator):

1. Press [AC]
2. Hold [SET/%] key for about 2 seconds
3. Press [TAX+]
4. Input the tax rate
5. Press [SET/%]


Printing models (except HR-8TE):

1. Have calculator in "print" mode
2. Press [CA]
3. Hold [SET/%] key for about 3 seconds
4. Input the tax rate
5. Press [TAX+]
6. Press [SET/%]

http://www.sharpusa.com/files/cas_man_XEA40S.pdf is the link from the previous answer to this problem. According to the manuals on line for cash (which was pretty reasonable at around 5-6$ the 40s and 41s use the same manuals.

Can't change the tax rate on a Sharp ER-2386 cash register

The amount that goes in the blank is the minimal amount that the tax can be applied. Put the number 1 in the blank to indicate all sales over $.01 will be taxed. Also, 8375 won't work. It's looking for a 5 digit number so if you're trying to indicate a 8 3/8% tax rate, it should be entered 83750. Post back if you have any questions.

1 Find your sales tax rate. You may need to contact your local government
office.
2 Put the PRG key in the Mode key slot and turn it to the PRG position.
3 In the round Number keys area, press 1 and then press the Tax 1 key.
