SOURCE: acer aspire 6920 back to factory settings
Acer sent me these instructions.
The
other way before Vista starts up is to tap ALT + F10 (at the same time
repeatedly) when the computer is first switched on.. The window of
opportunity is very small, so this may take a few attempts
Once you have tapped both the ALT and F10 repeatedly, you may see a screen showing:
“Edit Boot options for Microsoft Windows Vista”
If you see this, unfortunately, you have missed the window of opportunity, and you need to restart, and try again.
If you see this:
“Edit Boot options for Windows Setup” OR “Edit Boot options for Acer eRecovery”
Then
it indicates that you have tapped the ALT + F10 correctly, and all you
now need to do is press “Enter” and the Recovery program should load on
your screen after a short pause..
In some cases, you may need to remove the battery (for notebooks only) and run the machine directly from the mains.
The Disk2Disk recovery feature allows you to recover the system without recovery CDs.
This will return your system to factory settings and will delete everything stored on the machine.
If possible we strongly advise backing up anything important on your machine before starting the recovery process.

Follow these instructions carefully:
To start the recovery process:
1. Restart the system.
2. While the Acer logo is showing, press <Alt> + <F10> at the same time to
enter the recovery process.
3. Refer to the onscreen instructions to perform system recovery.
I copied the above from an Acer manual, and it works on my own system, which is not the same model as yours. But you must understand that this will basically restore your computer to the condition in which it was when you bought it, unpacked it from the box, and followed the instructions to set up a new computer.
This will give you your system back as if it were brandy new, but in most cases, anything you created, like DOCs, or XLS files, again … ANYthing you created since buying this computer, will also probably not be there any more.
You will have a pristine, clean as new, computer system.
Be careful, be absolutely sure this is what you want to do, and go ahead and do it.

A slightly different model requires pressing Alt+F10 at the start up and following the prompts. This will wipe the hard drive though, so back up everything important first. You can probably still get the data even if it doesn't boot Windows.
Consider what data you still need from your Acer Aspire One's hard drive. Save the files to an external USB device.
Restart the Acer Aspire One's operating system. Wait for the Acer logo to appear on the LCD screen.
Press the "Alt" and "F10" keys at the same time to bring up the recovery menu. Press "Enter."
Click "Next." Follow the prompts that appear on the screen to restore the operating system back to factory settings.
Use the drop-down boxes to select the time zone and language information for your Acer Aspire One. Restart the netbook when you are prompted to finish restoring the computer.
Connect the external USB device to your Acer Aspire One and transfer the data you saved earlier back to the netbook.
