Salam,
It depends on which machine(s) you want to use your hard drive for! If it should works on PCs (Windows and Linux) you have to format it in exFAT but if will use it only on MAC, it would be better if you use hfs+ (AKA: Mac OS extended journaled - not case sensitive).
And to do dat you need to open Disk Utility (type it in spotlight (use small magnifying glass icon in upper right corner of screen)). In Disk Utility's window, select your External Hard Drive itself (not its partition), go to Partition tab and change its format to anything you want, then click on apply button and wait for progress to be down.
If you want to use hfs+, you may need to chang partition table format to "GUID", and for exFat it needs to be "Master Boot Record"; to change that, use options button down in the same tab that I mentioned above.
PS: No need to say that formatting a drive will erase all data from it, so you need to copy them somewhere else before that.

SOURCE: Toshiba 500 GB External Hard drive cant be detected by windows xp

yes you could simply format the harddrive in Fat32 using your macos that would be the best solution but don`t forget to backup your data by copy pasting the files on your mac or something else and after that to move them on the external hdd again to be available on the windows machine

Sounds like a 2 part question.

Part 1, how do you use the drive on the computer to watch recorded shows from you DVR, simple install EX for windows which will allow your computer to access Linux formatted drives.

Part 2, how do you retrieve the files that were on it before, that depends how many new files you've put on it since. When the DVR formatted the drive it didn't erase the old files and they could easily be found again with a very inexpensive program. Each show you've recorded since will have overwritten some of the files. I will give you a link below for a review I wrote of such a program. Don't buy it right away, download the trial and scan the Toshiba, the program will show you a list of files it can recover then if you think it's worthwhile for the files it shows, only then pay for the program and recover the files.

Link for EX?

SOURCE: My girlfriend purchased a Toshiba

When the drive is plugged in, right click on "My Computer," click "manage" and then in the left hand pane click "Disk Management." You will see a few drives on the right, find your USB drive. Look at the size to make sure it is the right one. Also, of course, it will not be labeled "C:". Right click the drive and click "format". Follow the prompts, and if asked for a format choose "NTFS".

How i can reformat toshiba canvio 320 g on my macbook pro

To totally reformat the hard drive which will delete everything off it. Go to your applications folder and then to the utilities folder and double-click on disk utility. In the left hand column select your drive then select the erase button once on the erase section select the format you want to format the drive in (if you are only going to use it on a mac select Mac OS Extended, if it is going to be used on both macs and PCs select MS-DOS (FAT)) then choose the name you want to call your drive and then select erase.

REMEMBER THIS WILL WIPE ALL THE FILES ON YOUR HARD DRIVE.

Hope this helps.

I purchased a Toshiba Canvio 3.0 500 GB portable hard drive, and plugged it into my MacBook with Mac OS X Tiger. The icon for Toshiba EXT came up on the desktop but wouldn't do anything. The box came...

1 . Open the system drive, usually titled "Macintosh HD." Open Applications, then Utilities and double click the "Disk Utility" program to open it. A window will open giving a list of all the drives currently mounted on the computer.

2. Select the disk that needs to be formatted on the left. It is not possible to format the startup disk unless the system has booted from the Install Disk. It is important to note that formatting the startup disk will permanently erase the data stored on the disk. If you are planning on erasing the startup disk, back up all important files and applications.

3.
Click on the "Erase" tab to the right of the list of drives. The window will now display the options for erasing the hard drive and formatting it to work on the Macintosh computer.

4. Select the Volume Format from the pop-up list. In most cases it's best to leave it at "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" as this is the default. This setting is the best option for running Mac OS X. If there are other requirements for the disk, then select the format that best suits your needs.

  • 5. Name the hard drive. Type a name for the disk in the field where it asks for the name. This name will always appear when the disk is mounted on a Macintosh computer.

  • 6. Click the erase button. A window will open asking to verify the erase procedure. Click the erase button in this window to start the process of erasing the disk. Once the process is complete, the drive will appear with the name it was given on the left side of the window with the list of drives and on the desktop of the Macintosh computer.

I work with OS X (mac) , I can not copy a file bigger that 4 GB into my WD my book. I 've tried to change the format, but i can just chose between : Mac OS Extended ( Journaled) ,Mac OS Extended, case-...

    Hello,

Although Macs are designed to Read NTFS, they aren't designed to write to them and therefor cannot format a windows drive. If you are simply moving files onto the Mac from a windows PC you can format the drive using a PC and the Mac will be able to read and copy the files from the drive. If your goal is to have both windows and Mac read and write to the drive, your best bet is to use Mac OS Extended, then to buy and install Macdisk on your Windows PC. This will allow both to fully utilize the drive.

Any file size limitations you're running into at that point would have to be dealt with through compression or you may need to set up a NAS server that uses either NTFS or Linux format and copy files across the network rather than through a direct port like USB or FireWire.

Feel free to respond back and pick my brain if this advice only gets you half way solved.

    Hope this helps FixYa,

    Chris
