A hard drive is the brain of a computer. However, over time, that brain can become overworked and overly saturated with old software and outdated information. It becomes clogged and needs a fresh start. By erasing a hard drive, you can give your PC that fresh new beginning. With a few steps you can erase your hard drive manually, without the aid of expensive software.

Make sure your data is protected before you proceed. Whatever you do not save will be lost once you erase the drive. Use a CD or jumpdrive to save your information. Boot with a system disk. Before you continue to erase the hard drive, use the system to create a system disk. Use a 3-1/2 inch floppy disk and format it with the command "format a: /s"; this will create a bootable disk that contains system commands. Place it in the drive of your system and turn it off, then back on. Reformat the hard drive. Once you've booted with the system disk, type "format c: /s"; this will reformat the hard disk, virtually destroying the old hard drive you used to know. Depending on the of the drive, the formatting may take a fairly long time. Once the formatting is over, use the command "fdisk" to create partitions (which are logical sections for your hard drive's storage). Given the newer hard drives and operating systems of today, you can fdisk the drive and use all of the space. or if you dont have a floppy drive Download a disk wiping utility, such as Darik's Boot and Nuke (DBAN) or KillDisk. DBAN is an open-source product, while KillDisk is available as a free, closed-source download. Once you download the file, save it to your computer somewhere easy to remember. Insert a blank CD into your computer and use a CD writing program to burn the hard disk wipe utility to the blank CD. If you are using Windows Vista or 7, there is a built-in utility that will perform this task. Back up the data on your computer that you want to save, if necessary. Insert the CD that you created into the computer that is attached to the hard drive you wish to erase. Power on the computer and choose the setup option to boot from the CD. Once you have booted from the CD, you will enter into the hard disk wipe utility. Depending on which utility you chose to use, this screen will vary, but the choice you want to select is to erase or wipe a disk drive. Choose the hard disk that you wish to wipe and confirm that you wish to permanently erase the data on it. Before confirming this, you may wish to physically double check and ensure that you are erasing the correct drive. Once you start the erasing process, it cannot be halted, paused or reversed. You will have to wait for anywhere from a few hours to even a few days for the process to complete, depending on how large your hard drive is.
or you could just reinstall another operating system this will automatically delete the old wrong one you installed.

Hope this helps.

How to reformat my laptop toshiba A355-S6687

You can do by running system installation program.
Or you can run a disk tool program provided from hard drive manufacture. This way you will erase all hidden partitions which contain restore source.
So, unless you REALLY have to erase your HD totally, ( it means low level or zero format) please, run system CD like XP or 7.

HI! Trying to install Win XP on my brand new Asus EeeBox EB1501P. No joy. Comes up with blue screen saying it has detected a fault and is shutting down to prevent damage. What to do?

What I do is copy the code down search the code to see what the code means then I replace that device. More than likely it is the hard drive that is having the issue accepting the install. I use a program called Hirens Boot/CD which can be had at there you can download the software what this does is completely erase the HD totally checks the sectors then formats and prepares the drive if it does not find any errors on the drive.
I have done several computers and had to replace HD in most of them this may not be your case. It could be a corrupt file in the partition that is left for storage. Get that software download it the torrent file. You will need this software which is free to download as well. I provided the exact link for you to download the Hirens Boot CD software. Burn it to disk insert the disk in the drive then restart the computer follow the on screen directions and it will do its thing. The HD will be completely erased nothing on it. Then insert the operating system disk again and go from there. I hope this assisted you. John

I have Albatron PX865PE Pro motherboard. After formatting HD and reinstalling new windows XP everything was ok until I reinstalled the software of WIN TV card which card was already on the pc. After the...

I have found that if using a previous used hd and just reformatting the drive wouldn't allways work with some software and some pci cards.
I found out that using a data eraser first on the hd,then installing windows fully, then add the add-ons(pci Boards) and software as directed works fine.

(data eraser) my software overwrites with 00 all of the drive including the system files.

HP NC6320 - drive not detected or found during OS install

That is a possibility that it has a data protection. Try this download the super FDisk and burn the ISO to a DVD. then boot off of it and delete all partitons on your HDD that way it will be erased so you can start over new. You might be able to do this on HPs boot disk too. Unfortunately you cannot update the HDD firmware after the drive has no OS on it. In this case you need an outside tool to totally erase the HDD so the install can see it again.

I just got one and when i put it in my computer it wants to install something, and i dont want it to, and it show up anywhere on my computer.

are there any files on the hard drive that are your and you want to keep. the one thing you can try is formatting the hard drive but doing that completely wipes everything on the hd.

ALSO if you do this and alter the software on the hd, make sure that it does not effect your warrenty

to format, go to my computer --> right click on the hd you want to format --> click on format and then change the necessary options and then click format.
this should get rid of the files that are on the hd

Ubuntu Repair

Fsck will do a standard filesystem check in Linux. Read the fsck manual pages (man fsck - from terminal) for usage instructions. Additionally, most drive manufacturers make a diagnostic boot disk you can download to check the drive for further errors than fsck can.

If you are still having problems after using the drive manufacturer's tools. and assuming your drive passes those tests, you can always try a low-level format with DBAN or a similar tool to completely erase the entire drive (this will completely erase every part of the drive, even the partition map and master boot record thereby requiring a reinstall of all software). From there, you can decide if your drive needs further repair / replacement.

Hope this helps!
