My buffalo drivestation external harddrive don't power up?

Buffalo JustStore Desktop hard drive specs (1 TB - Hi-Speed USB) HD-E1.0TU2-EU donot powered up,I couldn't access my documents.any help?

A USB hard drive is a portable external storage device that works just like a conventional hard drive. The device is simply plugged into a USB port on your computer as you would connect a flash drive. Unlike a flash drive, however, a USB hard drive can store a much larger amount of data. If your computer will not recognize your USB hard drive, you can try troubleshooting steps to resolve the problem.

Plug one end of the USB cable into the port on your hard drive and plug the other end into the USB port of your computer. Ensure that both ends of the cable are connected securely. Open "My Computer" (Windows XP) or "Computer" (Windows Vista/7). The USB device should be listed as "removable disk" once it is plugged into the computer. If it is not listed among the available drives on your computer, proceed to the next step. Ensure that the data cable is working properly. Sometimes they become faulty due to overstretching age or heavy objects sitting on top of them. Try another USB cable if you have one available. Disconnect all other USB devices from the computer as they may interfere with the operating system detecting the external hard drive. Reboot the computer if the USB hard drive is still not recognized. Plug the USB cable into another USB port and check to see if the device is detected. If you are using a USB hub, remove the device and plug the external hard drive directly into a USB port. If the computer still fails to recognize the device, the external hard drive itself may be experiencing a hardware problem. Check the status of the hard drive in the "Device Manager" window. Under Windows XP, right click "My Computer" and select "Device Manager." For Windows Vista and Windows 7, click the "Windows" button in the lower left corner of the screen, then type "Computer Management" in the search bar and press "Enter." Select "Device Manager" in the "Computer Management" window. In the Device Manager window, click the "+" sign that appears beside "Disk Drives." If the external drive is not listed, click "Other Devices" in the Device Manager window and see if an "Unknown Device" appears. Windows 7 First, please disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps:

Click "Start" button, type "devmgmt.msc" (without quotation marks) in the "Search" bar and press "Enter". Click "Continue" if necessary.

In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the Host Controller, click "Uninstall" and click "OK".

Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".


Then, restart your computer and Windows 7 will reinstall all USB controllers automatically. If the hard drive that has failed is the same one that you are trying to recover from might the reason that you are getting this error. This could be an issue where the part of the hard drive you are trying to access is corrupt and not accessible which would explain the reason that it would let you access the other partition. Now I have seen cases where Malware can break the link of a Hard Drive. So let's try a couple of steps. Let's go back in to "Disk Management" Lets right click on the partition that you are not able to access and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths" Now try selecting a new Drive Letter. This will restore the path if it has been broken. The external hard drive may have been detected but the device is not working properly. If it is still under warranty, take the device to the computer store where it was purchased to have it repaired or replaced. Hope this helps.

This generally means you have a hardware failure in the drive or enclosure. The simplest way to test which is to have a hardware tech move the drive into a new enclosure and see if it works.

This will void your warranty if you do it, so, if the drive is under warranty and there are no files you consider valuable on the drive, call the manufacturer for warranty support.

If you value the data more than the drive is worth then take it to your local hardware vendor and ask them to test the hard drive in a new enclosure. Good odds it will work this way but if not you may need the help of a data recovery specialist.

In North America I use Armor-IT, if you are in a different region and the new enclosure fails to garner results, comment back with your region(Country, State, City) and I will supply you with the closest reputable facility.

Okay , so there are some steps to figure out what is wrong with your external.

Firstly , if your computer makes a sound when you plug in your external , go to Start-Control Panel-Administrative Tools-Computer Management-Disk Management , and see if your external drive is listed here with your local drives. If it is listed , right click on the drive and change the drive letter to make it appear in "my computer".

If your drive does not make a connection sound when connecting to your computer and also does not show up , please follow the next step.

Remove the hard drive from the casing if possible and install it in your computer case or another external case.If the drive works , the problem is with the casing and you can ignore the drive.

Now , if the problem is with the casing , there are still 3 possibilities.

  1. The USB cable between the drive and the computer may be damaged.
  2. The circuit board which connects your drive to the interface of the external may be blown.
  3. The power supply (if applicable) may have a blown transformer.
The latter is the easiest to diagnose , does your external light up at all when you plug in the power? If not , then this is probably your problem. On the bottom of the adapter is a label which you will be able to use to have a new adapter made at your local electronics shop and this will cost about $30 max. They will also be able to test the adapter with a clamp meter to see if this is really the problem and this should be free.

The second component you want to test is the USB cable. If you have a printer , swop out the cables and see if your printer functions normally. Most externals use the same connector so you should be able to test it in this manner. If the cable works go on to the last step. If the cable is defective , replace it with a new one which you can find for about $10 at most electronics and chain stores.

The last component to test is the circuit board. This is a bit of a grey zone as you probably won't be able to spot the blown component unless it failed really badly. With the casing already opened , locate the external's circuit board and check to see if you have any blackened components or fluids leaking from some components. If all the other components of the external worked perfectly , then this is the faulty part. It is not really economical to replace the circuit as most of the time it is out of production by the time you need to replace it and it still costs a lot even if it is available so if your drive is working perfectly when connected via sata or IDE on your computer , the best is to buy a new casing and place your old drive in the new casing.

A casing costs about $50 and you could get it at most tech shops and big chain stores like Best Buy.

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files.

When you connect it up, are there any lights that turn on? Do you hear any mechanical sounds from the external unit?


(Where do you look in your laptop? In My Computer, does it simply not show up there?
Click on Start ... Control Panel ... System ... Device Manager.


Can you see the device in Disk Drives, or in the USB device listing?

If so, does it have any Caution tags on it?

If you right-click and ask for its Properties, what does that say?


Back out of all that.



Click on Start, then RIGHT-click on My Computer, click on Manage. In the left pane expand Storage if necessary and click on Disk Management. Look in the LOWER RIGHT pane and scroll through all the hardware devices it shows there.


Do you see that external drive there?

If not, you have a hardware problem.


IF you can see the unit in Disk Management's lower right pane, look at the main block which has info on it.

It will show a Volume Name like My Disk or something, a Windows letter name like E, a size, a File System like NTFS, and a status. What are those?


If it simply has no letter name you can assign one by right-clicking on it.

If its File System is shown as "RAW", you have a little corrupted info in the disk control files. It may ask if you want to Format the disk and you are right to NOT do that.


3. Does it display the same info if you connect it to another PC?


4. IF the unit lights up but does not show anywhere as a valid piece of hardware, it is still possible that the HDD inside it is OK with good data, and the problem is with the case - its power supply or communication interface chips.


If that is the case, a simple way to check is to open the external case , uninstall the HDD unit inside, then install it temporarily in a desktop PC.


BUT your external unit MAY be one designed for use with laptops, and those have slightly different connectors on the, you would need an adapter to make the connections to the desktop machine.


But if you can do that, a good HDD will just show up like any other installed HDD. If that happens you can look more closely at the empty case as the culprit.

You should try mounting the hard disk internally since any external HDD is actually a normal HDD in a SATA to USB enclosure. If that doesn't work , you should try finding recovery experts in your area but that might be expensive!

External hard drive won't show files


If it behaves like this for multiple computers with multiple operating systems, I would think that the problem is with the hard drive or with how the files were stored. I would recommend trying a free recovery utility:

If this does not work, there are professionals who can do this service for you however it is generally expensive.
As a last ditch effort, boot your computer from a free Ubuntu CD (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download) and see if it recognizes your files.

Have a 1 tb buffalo external hd. worked great had it for back up. I unplugged it to move my computer. when I plugged it back in, there was no green light no power to the drive. check voltage and the power...


try to test it on other computer or laptop... if the unit are still exist maybe your problem would be the external drive..there are no switch button on it, because most of the switches are located on the adapter, the only testing you could do is to test it to other unit..If the external drive are ok once after you test from other PC's, then might as well check your USB port by plugging-in to other port...or try to use other power supply on your computer, co'z sometimes the supply can no longer supplied any voltage coming from your external drive once it plug-in..

First make sure usb cable connected to harddrive is working fine. try it in different usb ports. Press windows key +R key so you can see run then type in run "devmgmt.msc" then press ok so you can see device manager uninstall all usb drivers then it automatic install usb drivers. then check. Also you need to change registry for that type in run "regedit" then press ok then you can see registry editor then locate below key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11 CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} And remove upper filter and lower filter.Then restart computer then check. Also locate the below key and make sure it's value is 3 not 4. HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\usbstor make sure start value is 3 not 4. Let me know if you need further assistance.
