Welder will not power up

Checked voltage at plug and it is good. The welder is new out of the box and will not come on.

What does the voltage window display? If it is reading open circuit voltage then check your leads. You could have a front control board failed if not. You should probably take it to a miller tech to have pre power checks performed.

the first thing with this situation is be vary careful this can KILL,
insure that the ground contact to your welder is of good quality, you might have a voltage induced in the metal frame of your welder by the large transformer(inductor) used to modify the voltage/current to a value you can weld with, with a good ground this will not happen, if the ground contact is poor, and you repair the contact, plug it in and it trips the barker, your welder is faulty by way of the primary coil in the inductor contacting the metal body of the welder, this is not worth repairing, also look for any wires that may have worn off its insulation and are contacting the mettle frame of the welder, a good ground will save your life, insure that all your power tools that have a 3 wire cord have a ground contact. good luck and always be safe

Hobart 140 voltage drop when welding in all setting using 30 wire and uni mix gas will start out welding good then will not ?????


Check your input line voltage. 115 volt Mig welders / plasma cutters need stable voltage / current. Test to see if the voltage drops to below 100 volts when welding. If so, find a more stable power supply.

Have you tried it on another outlet, say at a friends' house, etc?
Reset button on the welder tripped? Double check the breakers and all connections. If it was working before, it should work now. Try some different breakers to check for good juice. Good luck!

take side panel off where power goes into unit,check for voltage ,if not go to where plug is plugged into check for power if there is power check the crows foot to make sure all three wires are tightly screwed to terminals

Welder doesnt turn on...


Have you connected the feed from your breaker box to ADJACENT lugs on a dual pole breaker? By code you must use a ganged breaker.

You should use a voltmeter to verify the plug is getting power on teh desired pins.

dont know what unit your uncle has but here is a easy test,open unit go to feed motor unplg the connector have unit running pull gun trigger check for voltage at plug ,if no voltage trace wires back (with the unit unplug , for your safety)probably will go to one side of main contactor.restart unit being careful for this is main input power.if no power main contactor is bad .if you have power at motor plug(wire feed motor) the motor is bad. hope this helps your uncle.

Get a volt meter, go to ohms setting , check transformer to ground for low to zero ohms reading. also look closely at transformer windings for foreign objects in between them, never know what you my find. If transformer is shorted to ground probably time to say some nice words over it before burial. Also just for kicks try a new gun on it, (there is a reason i'm asking you to do(this) see if you can find someone that has spare. A good honest repair shop would probably be reasonable if all else fails. to a least let you know if the transformers a problem. good luck

it probably has a fuse for overheating safety, or else the feed motor fried

Welder not charging battery


Most engine driven welders have the charge armature located underneath the flywheel of the engine, but you need to check a couple of other things before you start tearing down the engine. Look for a small rectangular module on the blower housing of the engine, on a Kohler this is at the side, on an Onan it's at the top. This is the rectifier/charger module and it will have 3 wires, the 2 on the outside will be the AC from the armature, and the middle one is the battery charge positive. With the engine not running, use a DC voltmeter to measure the voltage between this middle tab and the engine block, you should see a voltage that's very nearly equal to the battery voltage. If you don't see a voltage there you may have either a blown fuse, a tripped circuit breaker, or a broken wire leading to the battery. On some welders the fuse or circut breaker is inside the welder cabinet on the bulkhead between the engine and the generator parts of the welder.
If you did see battery voltage at the charge terminal, start the engine, switch the voltmeter to measure AC voltage and measaure the voltage from one of the outside terminals to the other, you should see 15 volts or more (be careful not to short out anything). If you get a nice AC voltage, switch back to DC and measure the charge output again (engine block to middle tab), it should be greater than the battery voltage we measured before and it should be slowly getting greater, if not the rectifier/charger module is bad.
If you didn't see enough AC going into the module, stop the engine, disconnect the plug from the module and use an ohm meter to measure the resistance between the 2 outside wires that go back to the engine, something between 100 and 1500 ohms is good. If you measure an open circiut (OL on my meter) or if you measure 0 ohms, the armature is probably bad. You have to take the flywheel off the engine to see the armature. If you got a good restance reading but the voltage is still low you may have one or more broken magnets inside the flywheel, again you have to do some serious disassembly to see if that's the case.
